So, Toby has an abscess on his chin which was caused by an infection in his right lower incisor. The tooth was damaged and causing other problems too so has been removed. He has a hole in his chin where the abscess was marsupialised so it can be flushed and he has a hole in his gum where the tooth was removed.
Now the icky bit, I have been flushing the hole with saline as instructed but am not sure I have been getting it clean enough. The inside of the hole looks browny yellowy like pus but that's the colour of the flesh inside the hole and sometimes I can get a bit of sticky, almost lumpy, pus to come out. He also has a bit of pus coming out of the hole in his gum where the tooth was. The lump size has halved since Monday when he had it done and the area around the hole doesn't feel hot to the touch but I'm just worried a bit that it's not healing right. I can't ring the vet today because they are closed but I was just wondering if anyone else has had this before and will it eventually just get better as he heals?
He is on Zithromax and Metacam.

This sounds very like an abscess that I am currently dealing with. We are now using a canula, that I am inserting into the hole under chin and then flushing with a very dilute F10 solution. We have also added Marbocyl in, so we are now giving a combination of Zithromax and Marbocyl. When do you next see the vet?
For external cleaning of the abscess site, I use the flat cotton wool pads. They are perfect for abscess cleaning, but you do have to be quite aggressive in the way you clean, so that you remove any scab this is forming and keep it open.
