Siddy

Hello there,

I'm VERY new, all of 10 minutes now ;)

I have 2 Guineas, Sid and Scrat. They are 4 years old now. The thing is, i've noticed Sid not responding to my kissy noises i do to get them to come and get their treats...or even when i talk to them in the highest pitch (like when they squeak) that would normally get him to shake and fluff up his fur....but not now :(
His voice has also changed, his squeaking is pretty much just like air coming out now (if you can imagine that)? He was always extemely verbal.
He's eating, drinking and running around the garden fine...and he still seems to get excited (like when i do my squeaky voice to him) as he shakes with a jump and his hair stands on end (these guys are majorly hairy, very long hair) but i'm not sure what he's getting excited about ? They do love to chase me around the garden, SO funny 2funny
I've just ordered some Otodex ear drops online, so i shall administer that for a few days (keeping them both inside for that duration)

He doesn't seem to be irritated by anything such as a parasite or sorts, not frantically itching his head or shaking his head either. Nothing is weaping from his ears.
I'm just wondering whether Guineasare prone to losing their hearing? Is it quite common or not?

Any tips, advice or anything on this would be much appreciated :smitten:

Hi, and welcome to the Forum. I don't know the answer to your question, but am sure there will be many people here who can help you.
I had to smile at the image of a piggy chasing you around the garden!

Hi, welcome to the forum! I have one who doesnt seem to be able to hear and his wheeks are just whispers, we think he's about 5. I think it just happens to some of them as they get older, i wouldnt do the ear drops unless he's off his food or seems in pain, they could do more harm than good. If your really concerned i'd take him the vets and get him checked over but it sounds to me like he's just being a typical old man lol!

Welcome! :) Eccles doesn't wheek at all and Twinkle's wheek is so high pitched it hardly comes out if that makes sense.

They are all so different, as long as they eat their food I wouldn't be concerned. :)

Oh wow, thanks for those replies :-*

They have really put my mind at rest.....as i don't feel he is poorly at all, it's only because he's quiet now, and doesn't answer me back anymore. Any change and we tend to freakout a bit don't we ::)

I brought them both in last night, i think I'll just monitor Sid for a bit. The weather here is really wet and windy at the moment, so they wouldn't be out and about anyway.

I will hold off with the drops too (thanks for that advice) i wouldn't like to aggravate them unnecessarily.

I will post again with any news :) Thanks again to you all, much appreciated :smitten:

You're welcome :) keep us posted on how he is. yes just keeping an eye on him is best i think O0 xx

I have an oldie over 6 now. She is blind and deaf which has happened gradually over the last year or so. I am sure it is just down to age. Most of my guineas I have had past the age of about 4 have started to lose weight aswell which I am sure again is just down to old age. They all appear perfectly healthy in every other way. As long as they continue to eat I imagine they are ok.

They're both back out and about again.....couldn't keep them in any longer, they are very much out door Guineas. While they were in, they had their bath, hair cut and brushed, and nails cut....only Scrat needs his nails cut, his toes lay sideways, so his nails curl ?
The weather is still pretty bad, but they're ok out, as they have shelter if they want it? Which they generally do, they run in with the first drop of rain....but them having the choice, is what i like!
So all in all, i think you guys are right...it must be his age. You have all put my mind at rest, and i thank you so much for that!
:smitten: O0

Take care all :-*

The nails is another sign of an oldie lol! they get thicker nails that dont sit right when they're older too. Aw i love them when they're little old men ;D

hoping your boys are well :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: the image of your piggies chasing you around the garden reminded me of our late petal 0:) 0:) 0:) OH would put her down on the lawn and i would be about 5ft away and she'd bound towards me and head butt me and try and get me to pick her up :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: it was so funny and thank you for bringing that memory back for me O0 hugs to your piggies :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:
