Hi. Writing with tears down my eyes. One of my piggies - Bela, almost 4 years - just suddenly died in my arms. I want to preserve his body so that the vet can check the cause of death bu she is out of city and she'll be back only in 3/4 days. How can I preserve his body? I thought I could wrap his body in a towel and then put him in my freezer. Would this be OK? Is there somethign better I can do? Thank you!

I’m so sorry for your loss. You can pop him in the freezer. Perhaps in a plastic bag that you can seal?

I would think so. But I’m not entirely sure. I feel like the towel would freeze on the piggy, if that makes sense.

Thank you all. So, I have one of those sealable transparent plastic bags like those one use at the airport. I will put my dear Bela in there and then I'l wrap that with a light towel. Thank you all for your support, I still can't believe what happened.

I think if it’s only for 3-4 days maybe just putting them in a fridge might be better?

I really have no idea. I don't like the possibility to keep him in the fridge and then maybe 3 days turn into 5 or 6 and his body loses preservation 😣

Perhaps you could ring the vet practice and ask them what they would recommend?

I'm so sorry for your loss ☹️ X

I would be wary of freezing because of the freezing process changing the cells and blood if the vet wanted to do tests. I would definitely ring and check with them.

Hi!

BIG HUGS

What a shock!

If your vet clinic is still open, I would call them and ask for their advice. They may prefer you to keep Bela in a plastic bag in the fridge, rather than in a freezer or to bring him round to them before they close.

You may find the information via the guide link helpful in the coming days and weeks as you are digesting what has just happened; both for yourself and for Bela's companion: Death, Dying, Terminal Illness, Grieving and Bereaved Companions: Information and Support for Owners and Their Children
