Our youngest boar Walker has had an OP done yesterday afternoon to investigate an ongoing issue with supposed cysts in his perennial sac area (and anus), which we’ve since rounded down to possible abscesses.

Walker was due a medical castration yesterday however this was cancelled as the risk of infection from the abscesses was too high. Instead, a number of biopsies were collected and will be sent off shortly. Bloods were not collected due to the Christmas period and postal strikes making it difficult to get the samples to the pathologist in time before it expires.

The OP went smoothly and Walker has been recovering, eating and drinking, and has been receptive to our usual feeding rituals (He did a little wheek at our usual veggie feeding time).

We’ve checked him every 2 hrs since he came home, given a little bit of critical care and water syringed at these intervals, and been checking his behaviours. I should also note that he smells *very* bad; like poo mixed with a musty smell.

When weighing him this morning, we noticed fresh blood on the scales, and checked his genitals, which appears to be bleeding sheer blood from his penis. We have a vet appointment at 14:15 today but need to know what to do in the interim.

I should note as well that he has had a groom, and is pooping normally; no blood in urine, but the blood is coming directly from the penis with no pressure being applied. He is currently eating hay by his own

It’s good you’ve got the vet appointment already booked. Other than ensuring he is eating, there is not much you can do at home - the vet needs to assess what is going on.

Let us know how the appointment goes

It is good you have a follow up appointment as it really isn't possible to tell what is going on without a hands on examination.
If the blood is a small amount (drops) then you are probably ok to wait until your scheduled appointment, but if he seems to be loosing a lot of blood and it isn't stopping then please take him back to the vet immediately as an emergency.
Good luck - I hope they can sort out the problem for your boy.

Hi

A little bleeding may happen on the day post op but please always give the clinic a call whenever you are worried about post-op symptoms to allow them to assess whether your piggy needs to be seen promptly. Any protractied or larger bleeds count as an emergency.

All the best.

So we’re back from the vets and long story short, Walker has now had his castration done via an abdominal incision, and is staying with the vets overnight.

The reason for this is that when we put him through an ultrasound scan, the vets identified a surprising amount of blood in Walker’s bladder, and they are unsure if it was coming from the testicles, or from some other form of possible wound - We opted to go with the castration as it rules out the last of the “external” causes for this issue, and means we can then focus on the “internal” possibilities if Walker recovers and survives.

Whilst he was having the castration, the vet also performed an X-Ray whilst he was still semi-sedated, and noticed no signs of bladder stones, sludge, calcification or other abnormalities. Just the blood, and its source, remains a mystery. She did note that the tissue around the bladder looked “bruised”, however.

The vet’s current working theory is this - The bladder issue may have been a long-standing problem which we have now discovered due to the ongoing issue with the abscesses in Walkers perennial sac, however he has never bled out of his penis or had any bladder issues until the surgery yesterday.

Could the surgery have caused the issue with the bleeding, in some way or form? Has anyone else had this happen to them? Right now we’re just praying he makes it.

Thank you for the update and fingers are firmly crossed that Walker has a peaceful night and is back home with you very soon.
He sounds like one tough piggy!

Fingers firmly crossed for Walker. Unfortunately, we cannot answer your question as what has caused the blood filled bruised bladder. It is our first such case; just to give you an idea as to how usual it is what you are dealing with.
