Hi guys, recently I used these type of washable absorbent layer underneath ( i usually use bath mats that's why I did not rly see what colour pee it was) and I saw one of my 3 month old pig has kind of dark brown pee? I don't see him squeaking when he's peeing or pooping and he's eating normally and actively stealing his brother's food. Can i get some advise on the pee?

Hello. My young piggies pee would become very brown when it dried. I think it’s called oxidation? As long as it’s not brown when they actually pee it’s ok. My piggies pee was white when they did it. Also some foods can make it change colour. But if you are worried about them or if they seem in pain then definitely get them seen by a vet just to make sure.

I’d take him to get checked at the vets. Keep us posted on how he gets on.

Hi!

Unfortunately the colour of the fleece makes an evaluation difficult.

Clear pee does oxidise when it contact with air; it dries to increasingly orange/rusty shades. Veg can also occasional discolour pee to orangey tones. If the puddle colour is all the same with a darker rim in the same colour, there is usually nothing to worry about.

Anything that is pink/red when fresh and brown when fully dried should be seen by a vet as that could indicate the presence of either porphyrine (red dye in the pee, which is characteristic for the onset of a urinary tract infection) or of blood Please be aware that when drying, you will find blood either as pink-red/brown dots in a pee puddle or (much more rarely) as a distinctly reddish or brown ring around the puddle when there is a lot of blood in the pee (in which case you should see other symptoms, too). In this case, please see a vet. In the case of a urinary tract infection, it can take 5-7 days for symptoms to consolidate. Until then, they are very off and on.

Update: The vet said they are fine because they are eating really well and pooping normally. She said it may be the diet but it's not a big concern unless they are not as active before. Bad news, the vet said they have mites... but yeah they are under medication for mites and hopefully they recover without reinfection 😢
