Dandelions

Firstly how much and how often can you feed fresh dandelions?
Secondly I only pick the leaves - can you feed the flowers?


Thirdly - do we need to wear a sign saying " NO I'M NOT CRAZY - I'M PICKING THESE FOR MY GUINEAPIGS" ?

Lol! I think they can eat the whole thing but not 100% sure. So far i have picked a couple of leaves for Monty & Waylon about 3 times in the last 2 weeks. Hopefully someone else will know more than me!

You shouldn't give them loads but a 2 or 3 dandelion leaves per piggy a day shouldn't do any harm. You can also pick the whole dandelion including root & give it a good wash, then give it to a group of 3 or 4 piggies. Ours eat the lot.

Dandelion - pick leaves, stems, flowers (even root OK), when young as they tend to get a bit bitter when older..

Please make sure before feeding them you wash thoroughly. Also make sure that they come from chemical and pesticide free areas and avoid areas close to roadsides as exhaust from cars can contaminate dandelions..

You also don't want to use from areas where dogs, cats or other animal species urinate or the other, as dog urine is poisonous to piggies..

Dandelion leaves are quite high in calcium, best fed every few days or so.
Use your best judgement and give in small amounts, especially if your piggies are not used to them, treat the same way as introducing fresh grass at the beginning of summer time..

I have found a great new spot its banked area on top of a 5ft wall, so well away from car exhausts and dogs, have picked the new fresh leaves (and thoroughly washed -) , unfortunately the brambles and ivy are starting to overtake so will have to find new source.

I feed mine them too and once (When i was picking Dandelions) a lady came by and said "WHATCHA DOIN' ?!?!? This is not your land" i explained it was for my piggies and she said "Oh my daughter has them , by the way why wont you pick them in our garden", i feed my piggies a half-a-handful each day Sadly winter here was quite cold though no snow so the dandelions are delayed

My boys adore dandelions! Especially the leaves. The heads are fine to give them as are the roots x I give them a few leaves a day if I can find any as well as one head each x my boys go crazy for grass so I also give them a hand full of that each every day! They go through it in a matter of minutes! I've been introducing them back outside for the summer x Lol I thought this was a cool emoji x

I got some dandelion seeds from eBay so I am going to grow them in pots for my two.Can't believe am growing something that I spend all my time trying to get rid of in the garden but i have two dogs so want to grow some that wont have been wee'd on.
