My Shelties bum fur is always damp and wet, although I provide bedding all over. I guess she just pees anyhow and sits in it. I tried cutting her fur but its not good enough. Should I shave her or something? Worried she might get a fungal infection from the wetness.

is your cage wire or wooden bottom? ours is a wooden bottom, so when zoe was wetting herself, we got a couple of cooling racks. the ones with tiny square holes so she couldn't catch her feet. we put the cooling racks on bricks so when zoe urinated it would run straight down. zoe was losing hair from the urine. i would suggest taking your piggy to the vet for a check up as she may have a urine infection or a skin allergy. zoe's ended up with surgery to remove reproductive organs as she has cystic ovaries and a mass growing on the outside of her uterus. hoping your wee one gets better soon. sorry i could not be more help for you. sending hugs and cuddles to you and your fur babies from oz. :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

A constantly wet bum can be a sign of a UTI but if piggy is a sheltie then it's likely to be her hair. It's easiest to keep it trimmed short at the back. Obviously see your vet if you're worried.

I absolutely would not recommend putting a piggy on any kind of wire flooring, be it mesh like or with actual holes. The texture and hardness could cause bumblefoot not to mention being extremely uncomfortable.

What bedding is she on? Maybe something more absorbent might help e.g Megazorb? Or even fleece / vet bed?

My shelties have their hair cut quite short around the bum - because otherwise it does drag. :)

Hi Hun, haven't seen you around for a while hows Evie?

Could it just be her fur that is getting wet around her bum? Hope she is ok. My Sheltie was like that and it was just the fur around the bum. :)

i did this on advice from 3 vets, i am sorry my advice was wrong! i was told to put zoe on the wire bottom as she was wetting herself and losing fur, we would change her bedding 3-6 times a day, having bum baths nothing helped till we got the cooling racks.
most cages available here in oz have wire bottoms, they seem to be the in thing at the moment, usually paper is put on top of the wire but for zoe it was pointless to do the paper thing. once zoe's tummy and poops get better on advice from the vets the cooling racks will be removed for zoe.
sending you hugs and cuddles to you and your fur baby. :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

May be worth getting her checked by the vet if her hair is already quite short as it could be a UTI.

definite no no to the wire bottom from me too. I have a piggy with bumblefoot (not caused by wire floor btw) and trust me it is very hard to treat. :(

The best thing to do is to change bedding regularly so it doesn't get damp when a pig has a UTI as they have very sensitive little feet.

Yes I agree, I meant to say that too.

Thx for the replies guys I'm pretty sure its not a UTI its her fur that is a little on the long side. Plus I have seen the way she pees, she justs pees in a place then sits /lays down in that spot and goes to sleep :-\ I'm using a C&C cage with cloroplast flooring, with newsppers and shavings as bedding. They have a litter box but they tend to go all over anyway lol. I guess I really have to try to cut her fur shorter then. My aby mix has no problems with wet fur.

Hi Sunshine&T , sry I have not been on much lately. Have been busy. Eevee is doing good. Both of my Gps are big girls now. I finally managed to get Oxbow for them through a friend so they are doing pretty good. Here are some recent pics.

I guess I'm gonna have to cut Pikos bum fur real short bcoz of the pee problem. It looks something like this now, only a little shorter coz I have trimmed it last week.

What lovely pics!

Yes, short back and sides needed for her! Otherwise it curls under and they do sit in it, bless them! You can kind of layer it so it's shorter around their bits but the top layer is a bit longer so it doesn't look odd. Might try to take some pics of my girls haircuts tonight.... if they agree! :)

i have to cut archie fur short, he's a coronet, i cut it all short underneath ans then the top layer just above the floor that way he isnt damp and grubby :)

I have two shelties and have the same problem. I cut it really short around the bum but leave her flowing locks at the front so they still look pretty!

They are stunning, soz I spelt Eevee's name wrong she is so much like Twinkle, I know we have talked about it before. It's uncanny! Your Sheltie is stunning, she has a gorgeous coat. I'd just keep it trim at the rear end, it's a shame to cut it though I love it really long bless! :)

they are real pretty piggies! pikos looks alot like rosie in body build and long fur. rosie was ginger and white though. we use to clip rosie's fur with scissors and clippers. and rosie hated it! :smitten: 0:) 0:) 0:) :smitten: really love the little black and white piggy! she is really cute. sending hugs and cuddles to you and your fur babies. :smitten:

Well it does look like somebody is going to have to have a butt cut ::)
Good luck i know a few of the girls on here do these regularly, mmmm i think it was Lez who is really good now at cutting long locks....... give her a pm for advice or start up a thread on how to do 'haircuts' :smitten:

I trimmed her back undercoat fur real short now. I still trim it every week. The top layer is still long but it doesnt matt or get wet so I guess its ok.

awww they're beautiful :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: yeah i have a coronet bertie who i have to trim round his butt ::)
that should help O0 i would change from shavings as they're not good for their feet :( could you get megazorb etc.?
She could have a UTI but see a vet if you're concerned O0 my bluebell's been having the same problem recently O0 she's a longer shorthaired LOL because she's bertie's sister she has some coronet in her O0 so i trimmed her right back, not very stylishly i'm afraid! ::) and they're getting cleaned out every day instead of every other day now and we're due to change them over onto megazorb as of Wednesday, and with a combination of this she's fine now O0 are your little one's feet sore? My bluebell's pads were a bit scalded as she sits in her wee so i'm washing them every day and applying GG soothe gel and this seems to be helping O0 good luck and i hope you get her sorted :smitten:
