This is something we found out a few weeks ago as she was walking funny. She's only just turned 4 years old so is a bit young to have pretty bad arthritis in her knees and back 😔
She is on 0.05ml of Tramadol and 0.15ml of Loxicom daily. Because she is younger, our vet didn't want her to be on two doses of Loxicom daily and risk the function of her kidneys. The medicine appears to be helping her and she is still her fun loving self and does her arthritic zoomies (minus popcorns unfortunately).
I'm so worried I won't have her for much longer, even though she is doing great right now 😥
Does anyone else have younger arthritic piggies?Resized_20211108_173534.webp

I had 2 piggies diagnosed with arthritis at 4 years old. Ben lived until 5 (his passing wasn’t caused by arthritis) and Bertie is about to turn 6 in December. Both were on Metacam / Loxicom daily (dosage has increased over time). Obviously, this is just my experience, and I’m sure that other members will have more to add. I hope that the medicine prescribed will help Daisy.

Poor Daisy. She's got great spirit to be doing zoomies with arthritis! Hope she takes it all in her stride for a long time to come.

I've had two piggies on long term pain medication due to arthritis. Toffee lived to be nearly six and the problems started when she was between 3.5 and 4 years old.
Muffin lived to be about 7.5 years, but I think in his case we started a bit later (about 5 years).
At the moment I've got Billie on low dose metacam (since this august). She just turned 4 and I hope that she will be a part of my life for many, many, many, many, many months to come.

I usualy try to reduce the dose from time to time a little bit when on long term pain medication and watch closley if it works.
But most of the times you have to keep your eyes open for signs that signal you have to increase the amount given and discuss the dosage with your vet.
Of course we all hope that our piggies grow really old, but the quality of liife is very important as well. I don't want my piggies to be in pain (if I can help it), so there is no alternative to pain medication if the piggy needs it - no matter how old.

I hope lovely Daisy feels better with the pain killers.

Thank you, that's very helpful. I think because my Violet lived to be 8 years old, I have it in the back of my mind that all my piggies will live to be that old, which of course isn't true. I hope she's with me for many months to come 💕

I hope the pain killers help and Daisy has many more happy years with you.

4 is middle to older age in many piggies, and quality of life is what counts most, so I wouldn’t be worried about the effects of long term pain killer/anti inflammatory medication as long as the benefits are being seen. My Holly has been on daily Metacam since January (she turned 5 in September ). And it’s really improved her quality of life.

My little RB Jess was 6 when she was diagnosed so no advice really but going on daily metacam for hers really put a spring in her step bless her! 😍 Hope the same for lovely Daisy but it sounds like she’s already doing well with her zoomies! Sure she’ll be with you for a long time to come and be a very happy (and pain free) piglet :) x

Poor Daisy! I haven’t done much research on this topic so please correct me if I’m wrong, but I’ve heard CBD behind a piggies ears with arthritis can help.
