I went to clean the guinea's out this morning and all their fleece had dark wet patches all over so I rung the vet and she said that it sounds like one of them has cystitis.

I have to find out which one of the 3 has it and see how he goes. She said if he starts lying down alot and generally not looking himself then to bring him to see her tomorrow or during the week.

She said its really common in guinea's, what could of caused it?anything I have fed them?

They all seem fine at this point, does it usually go without treatment?

One thing I have noticed 2 of my guinea's rarely drink, maybe this is the culprit.

Cystitis is more common in sows than boars,.What dry mix do you give them?, Gerty Guinea Pig has been proven to cause renal problems because of the chemicals used to colour the food...
As you said yourself, gps that do not seem to drink much are more prone to renal problems,so if you are sure they are not drinking enough, try giving extra water by syringe.Having said that,,they do actually get a lot of fluid from the veggies.Cucumber etc have a high water content.Washing the veggies in running water and nor shaking the excess off is a good way to get extra fluid into them.
A symptom of cystitis is that the gp will squeek aand strain when urinating, also they will often have an unpleasant smell round the backside.Sows can also get a crust around the genital area.
I do not recommend cranberry juice as it is difficult to get one without sweeteners. If you think one of your piggies does have a uti you will need to go to a avet for a course of Septrin.
UTI left untreated can spread into the kidney.

By the way I am MaryH not guineapigvet!.My login has gone crazy and I seem to have lost my old account and Mod status.

Thank you all very much.

The dry mix we use is one from Pets at home, its just the plain pellets?

dry food in the UK

Thank you all very much.

perhaps go to the food section on this forum and look at the different types of dry food available.
until recently i fed mine the ones you get from petshops but now i feed mine oxbow cavy cusine and oxbow western timothy hay and my girls are happy and healthy.
sadly oxbow and petshop ones are the only ones available here in south oz but i believe in the UK you have ones called excel, burgess and a few others even a guinea pig museli. so go to the food section and read what other memebers have said about each one and make your choice.
when changing slowly add some of the new to the old and slowly more new and less old till it is all new.
good luck and hugs to your piggies xx>>>xx>>>xx>>> and :rose:rose:rose
