So I took my boy (approx 5) to the vet on sat morning after seeing blood in wee Friday night. Early sat morning I did notice he would squeak when weeing. Vet said it was stress cystitis and gave him some meds and booked a check up for 4 weeks later. She said return sooner if no better or gets worse. When I asked how long to give before coming from no improvement she said one to 2 weeks. So I get its not even a week yet but he hasn't improved. I wouldn't say he's got worse. But he seems to be making pain noises and wees every 10 to 20 mins still. I want him better but don't want to rush back to the vet if no need, as this would be stressful for him and vet said reduce stress where possible. But with Xmas coming up I'm worried about have to go to emergency vet as opposed to pig vet.

Not really sure what I am asking here? Maybe some other people's prospectives and what they would do if he was yours? I'm not sure.

I am not one of the forum health experts but would expect that any pain relief would work almost immediately and you should have seen an improvement in the pain when urinating.

Not sure which vet you use but the Cat and Rabbit clinic in Northampton are the best around for guinea pigs and are used by the The Excellent Adventure Sanctuary (TEAS) who have lots of piggies with special medical needs. If you can get an appointment there they are very experienced with treating guinea pigs which isn't always the case with other vets.

If your guinea pig has not improved I would get your piggie another appointment.

There's a vet locator in the top bar, maybe you can find a recommended vet .I appreciate you live in Scotland, but your vet could ring Simon Maddock to get some advise.
I'm not a health and illness advisor, but I do have experience with cystitis.

He needs xrays as think stones and then either flush or operation. I've left him with them. I'm heartbroken. Who would have thought a little creature can hold such a big place in my heart! Got to collect him later. Very worried about him.

I picked him up at 5.50. It was Simon that did it. It was a stone pretty big one too! Bless him. He looks ok, but sorry for himself. I gave him some lettuce and he ate fine. They said he ate fine there but obviously keep an eye on eating/drinking etc. Hes on 4 diff meds now and got a check up on the 27th. Just now need to find a way to manage the cystitis to try and prevent as much as possible it coming back. (I know it may do, but keen to stay positive). Hes got a water bottle in every corner I covered some sections in towels to make it darker for recovery.

Yes, Brutus is doing well too! 😊

You’re doing right by having lots of water bottles, in various locations in the cage! That should really help! Has Simon prescribed him a diuretic too? xx
God knows, they told me so much I can't remember what is what. He already had loxicom and gabapentin to continue. And then got co trimoxazole yesterday to start last night and frusol to start once eating and drinking and recovered well. I'm sure one of those could be.

Can I ask what a diuretic does?

Frusol is a diuretic. Its my understanding it helps with fluid build up but my poppy was prescribed it to encourage her to drink more after her bladder stone surgery.

Yes, Frusol is a diuretic. It really helps keep the bladder well flushed through. Obviously this is something to discuss with Simon, but in all my years of keeping guinea pigs and running TEAS (around 25 years), I have never had a guinea pig with a bladder stone. I do tend to feed somewhat differently to how many people do. Here is a thread about how I feed the piggies at TEAS Feeding the guinea pigs at TEAS

I just want to say thank you to everyone for replying and helping.

Hes eating ok, perhaps not as normal but he is eating. I haven't seen him drink though. If I haven't seen him drink by lunch I will call vet for advice. But should I suggest giving water by syringe? If so how much how often?

I've discovered he loves cucumber water. They both do. I tried carrot water before but not interested but they love cucumber infused water! I gave them some in a syringe so done one of their water bottles. I tried to show them its cucumber water but they haven't understood yet. In fact when I tried Einstein with the syringe (to see if he liked it) he wouldn't let go. He had some fight and strength in him which must be a good sign!
