Hi,

My Guinea pig bumble had what we think was a cyst on his rump for a good few months, it didn't bother him at all and didn't hurt to touch it or anything so after reading a similar thread on here we left it.

A few weeks ago a hole formed on it so again after reading a similar thread on here we squeezed out the pus (which didn't smell and was a grey/white colour), until we couldn't anymore. We cleaned the area with warm salty water and he was absolutely fine and carried on as normal. Didn't bother him at all.

Then about a week later he seemed to be pooing a bit less. He seemed to be eating his hay and veggies still, but maybe not as much as normal. I looked at the cyst and it seemed a bit aggravated , red and warm so I had assumed it had developed into an abscess or got irritated from being squeezed, so we started giving him Baytril and I flushed it with a syringe with salty warm water. He is on his 5th day of Baytril & since then it looks a lot less aggrevated, is no longer red and sore looking, however, he is still not eating at the rate he was before, and he also is grooming himself quite a lot. I inspect his fur multiply times a day and it's in a good condition, not dry or sore and no bald patches. No signs of mites or mange.

What's also weird is he fidgets quite a lot & I think he is eating his poo, and not the poo they normally eat, the actual poo pellets that come out. I have been giving him pro biotics twice a day, once an hour after his Baytril at about 4pm and once in the morning. He hasn't got an upset tummy.

I am hoping after 7-10 days of Baytril the cyst will be healed but I wonder what is causing his fidgeting, poo eating and lack of appetite?could it just be the Baytril? I have weighed him and he's still a healthy 1312g. He will be going to the vets if he doesn't improve after his Baytril.

Any help is appreciated!

Thanks
Dani and bumble

Oh and what I forgot to mention and is even weirder is when we get him out of the cage (which is a lot) he poos so much more than when he's in the cage. He could easily produce 10-15 poos within 10-15 mins of sitting with us.

I have also been giving him critical care, which sometimes he enjoys and sometimes he doesn't.

Did the vet also prescribe any painkillers when you were prescribed the baytril five days ago?

Please switch to daily weight checks so you can monitor hay intake - its the only way to know enough hay is going in each day. If he is not eating enough hay, then he will need to be syringe fed.

Antibiotics and do upset their tummies and cause lack of appetite.

No painkillers but I will ask for some I think, if it carries on. I will weigh him from now on for sure. He usually sits around 1300-1400.

I have been syringe feeding him on and off, sometimes he just takes it but doesn't swallow it so it's very frustrating. Other times he loves it! I am hoping it's just the Baytril messing with his appetite.

The main mystery for me atm is the excessive grooming and fidgeting, not sure why he's doing that. Thanks for your advice!

My first thought would be discomfort but of course from the written word we create our own images etc of the situation.

Did the vet say it whether it was a cyst or abscess?

I’m surprised the vet didn’t prescribe painkillers when they gave you the baytril?

Hi

All the best. The excessive grooming and fidgeting is sign of discomfort and pain.
