So my boys are now indoors but I'm really struggling to cope with the smell. I've just found out I'm pregnant so I'm possibly over sensitive but I need to help cut it down. Otherwise, they'll end up stuck in the spare room which I don't really want.

They're currently in the loving room. They have a 4x2 Ferplast cage, lined with newspaper and wood chippings but they are rarely confined to it. Most of the time, the base of their cage is inside a 5x5 hutch which is lined with tarp and then some old towels. They then have the choice to hop between the run and cage. They're only confined to the cage for around a day at a time to give us chance to wash the towels. Then they have 3/4 days of freedom again. The cage part is cleaned out once a week but they rarely wee in it.

So, any advice on getting rid of the smell? I regularly open the doors/windows and keep them clean.

Thanks!

Congratulations on your pregnancy! But I suspect that is part of the problem, I remember some very miserable months due to be min massively over sensitive :( might an air freshener help?

Sure someone will be along soon to suggest bedding ideas

Hi, we have three boars in a c and c home in our 21 foot long kitchen. Usually they are fine but sometimes we would get a smell, especially if they had been rumbling and scent marking. We have switched to aubiose, lined with newspaper. This does a good job with the smell and only needs a full clean once a week.

Have a look at www.aubiose.co.uk. It was originally for horses, but lots of pet owners, including many on this forum use it. I think there is an article on bedding on this site that details several options including aubiose. I paid about £10 for a big bale, but the postage was another £6, so be careful when comparing prices on web.

I get mine from a local equine supplier and therefore don't have to pay the postage

I used to use Beaphar cage fresh granules to mix in with wood pellets in my hay trays, they help to absorb urine and make the cage smell nice, I've since switched to puppy pads though and rarely get any smells anymore.

i'd guess it's probably the wood chippings and towels that are holding the smell. i'd probably try changing those more often first and see if that helps.

if you leave little pots of either baking soda or white vinegar around the room, these absorb smells. kind of a pet safe air freshener alternative. although being pregnant, you may smell the vinegar instead! :))

have to try carefresh bedding out of pets at home I know it costs £6 but it soaks up the mess and you can't smell any think

Congratulations on your pregnancy! I remember smells becoming really strong and making me feel sick during my pregnancy!

Regarding piggies though, I never really get any smells and I have 5 boys! But I throughly clean every 1-2 days.

Congratulations!

Puppy pads, like Drezella, help with keeping the smell at bay much better than our fleece. They help keep things dry which I guess helps with eliminating odours.

Thanks guys (and apologies for the awful spelling!)

I'm sure it's the towels rather than the cage that's giving the problem and I don't have the money to keep filling a 5x5 run with fresh bedding! I think I might give the puppy pads a go and see how I get on.

have you thought of using fleece cage liners? i change mine twice a week and the only smell that bothers me is their hay.. and congratulations on your pregnancy x
