One of my piggies has two cuts on his back. I caught his ‘brother’ on his back last week and think this may be the result. After speaking to someone at Pets at Home, I’ve put some coconut oil on it but I was wondering if anyone else’s piggies have had anything similar and if so, what would you suggest? Thank you in advance x 79DC761D-A963-4F91-90A2-058F3F03DD7A.webp

Hi!

How old are your boys and how long have you had them?
Please be aware that coconut oil is not a disinfective and should not be put on open wounds.

Hi, Sid (the one with the bite cut) has just turned one and his cage mate, Alfred, is 3ish. They have been together since we got Sid at about 8 weeks and this is the first issue we’ve had. I did ask the advice of the vet nurse before applying the coconut oil.

How are the boys behaving with each other? It is often not easy to distinguish between bites and mange mites or fungal right at the start where a piggy can bite themselves bloody.

Here is advice on how you can work out whether your boys have an issue. It is very rare for an adult boar to attack another. Boars: Teenage, Bullying, Fighting, Fall-outs And What Next?

Thank you for the link

They seem fine with each other. They often have little squabbles where they’ll growl at each other but it rarely ever really gets physical. It’s just the twice that I’ve caught Alfred on Sid’s back and that’s just been recently.

I’ve given him a good check over and the cuts are only on his back and no where else. Also, Alfred has absolutely nothing on him. These two factors together make me think that it can’t be mites or a fungal infection.

Mites and fungal infection always happen with one piggy before the other picks it up; they are opportunistic issues that can make an appearance when the immune system is lowered for some reason. But if it is mange mites or fungal, then you should see the patches/bare skin spreading in the next few days.

Have you had your boy vet checked or have you just spoken to a nurse?

I spoke to a nurse yesterday but I’ll be taking him to the vet tomorrow. I get so worried because we lost a piggy last year and I can’t help but think the worst.

It is not the worst - it is just working out what is going on. and addressing any issues. ;)
