Hi guys!

I'm considering getting some fleece to attempt to make some cozies for my pigs but I'm going to have an issue if they require frequent washing. My mum is allergic to piggy fur so I won't be able to wash anything in the washer.

Hand-washing I can do, but I can't keep them in with the pigs for long periods of time when I'm at uni and my parents look after them, cause obviously my mum can't touch them and something tells me my dad would just take them out to get rid of the hassle! :P

I'm considering saving up for one of those portable washing machines so I can have fleecy bits for them, but they're not cheap!

For those of you that have them, how often do you need to wash them? I appreciate that it depends on the pigs and whether they like to pee on them, but an average estimate would be fantastic!

Thanks :D

I wash my cosies/vetbed/fleece in a old pillow case (tied) so hay/sawdust/pig hair doesnt end up in the washing machine :)) perhaps you could use this? EDIT: Ive just realised you mums allergic to piggie fur :)

If you leave the cosie in the hutch all day and all night and you have two pigs they will need washing every 2 days. If you just leave it in for a couple of hours a day they can last upto a week, but will whiff a bit :))

Oh and also, i find any cosies made with cotton on the outside and fleece on the inner becomes wet really, really quickly the cotton just seems to soak it up. So i'd suggest fleece, and a fleecey 'pad' to go inside the cosie.

If you use a pad inside the cosie, (say 2) you can make the cosie last a week and just change the pads every two days :)

Oh dear... Starting to think it might not be possible...

I have a pair who will be getting at least a blankie (my new boy has a thing for fleece blankets so we will treat him to one).

However... I have a herd of 7 which will eventually increase to 11, so even if I made lots of cozies/padded blankets I'll be forever washing them!

I think it depends how well litter trained your boys are? I only wash the piggies crash pad and tunnel once a week (although the fleece to the cage is changed daily). I tend to hoover the tunnel and crash pad before putting it in the wash to avoid so much fur going in the washer. You could always fill a large washing up bowl up with water and soap powder, and soak the soft furnishings over night? Then in the morning, wring the excess water off, empty the dirty water down the toilet, then fill the tub up again with clean water to rinse off the soap. This would mean it doesn't take up a sink/cause an inconvenience to people wanting to wash their hands etc, and is also more hygienic?

They do require alot of washing I'm afriad :( and the piggie hairs just seem to stick to them too :{ I have four cosies for my two boys but some weeks they dont get a cosie as its too much hassle with washing :red

To be honest, I think it depends on two things:

1) how much your piggies wee in the cozy

2) whether the cozy is all fleece or fleece/cotton. The wee will wick through fleece but will be absorbed into cotton. My own preference is therefore for all fleece cozies.

I'm just going through this and changed to fleece and cosies. I'm worried bout clogging machine so trip to laundrette every week might be on cards!
