Hi everyone,

I have noticed in the past few weeks that my one year old guinea pig is whimpering/crying when she wees and every now and agen when she poos, its been occuring for about 3 weeks now that I'm aware of.

does anyone know what is wrong?

Thanks.
kristie xx

It is almost certain to be cystitis caused either by a UTI and/or by a stone/sludge in the bladder.
She will need an xray, no anaesthetic is needed, to determine if stones are present. In the meantime give her lots of pure natural cranberry juice, this will help ease her discomfort.

could be a number of things 1st water infection 2,cystitis 3, bladder stones either way i would take her the vets to get her seen try putting her on white fleece or towels to see what colour it is this is very useful when going the vets has you can tell the vet what colour it is

sorry think we posted the same time:)):)):)):)):)):))

well i have placed her in my backup cage on her own on kitchen towels to see what her wee looks like, i had a suspicion it would be cystitis and have been giving her cranberry juice...

but however she has jst started crying tonite when pooing so I'm a little worried, hoping i can get a vet appointment for tommorrow

How much will an xray cost?
Thanks

just thought id mention she really arches her back when she is weeing and pooing

I echo what everyone else has said. Please take her to a vet ASAP. The cost of an x ray isn't cheap and it varies in price depending on your vet. My vet charged me £50 but this included medication too. In the meantime offer your piggy cranberry juice and try syringing her water. Septrin is the recommended antibiotic for a guinea pig with a UTI. If possible, try and take a urine sample to the vets with you so that it can be tested there and then. This can be done by placing your piggy in a pet carrier and syringing the urine up when she wee's. xx

"My vet charged me £50 "
The size of film that vets use only costs a very few pounds, quite a good profit even after deduction of expenses.

I don't charge anything but I am not a vet!

Sometimes when there is blood in the urine, it isn't visible to the naked eye. Good luck at the vets and please keep us posted x

Do any of you use reagent strips to test for blood in the urine? My vet charges about £10 for a urine test, it must surely be cheaper to do this yourself and would give a clearer picture than urine on a towel.

If so can anyone recommend a manufacturer and source?

Kristie: Good luck with your piggie. Make sure the vet doesn't try to palm you off with Baytril instead of Septrin, I've had to argue that with my vet a couple of times.

Blood in the urine can have many causes, the only absolute test for stones is an xray. I think I've already posted that!
Usually, though not always, the cause is a stone/sludge. I would be more inclined to get an xray taken as the first priority. (I do appreciate that, for me, the cost is negligible.)
I have repeated everything I said on page 1, I can't be bothered to edit/delete!

hey,

Took treacle to the vets tonight and the vets suspects a uti but says its possibly stones as she is very sore and she had prescribed septrin ad metacam for 10 days and they i will go back and if she is not better the vet will look for stones.

Thanks for all of your help and il keep you posted.

ps. she says she will need to grind her teeth down as they are too long and that she need more hay but they have an endless suply and she eats more than my other piggy and her teeth are fine? what can i do? i cant force feed her more hay lol.

"ps. she says she will need to grind her teeth down as they are too long"

I become very wary when I read that a vet has made that comment.
Which teeth are supposed to be too long?

Her back teeth, i thought it was a bit strange but she checked my other pig and sed hers were fine and to feed them more hay.

She said she would grind them down when i take her back if she needs an operation (if its stones).

I am pleased that your vet has prescribed Septrin and Metacam. I do hope that it is a UTI and not a stone.
Please give Treacle a kiss from me and keep us posted on her progress xx

i will do xoxo

dont think she likes the taste of metacam cant blame her though it stinks lol

My Connie (r.i.p) hated the taste of metacam too and would screw her face up. She loved the taste of Septrin though, unlike Eliza who just hates the syringe and anything in it! x

same thing just happened to my Fugly last week, his came on three days after his lump operation.
he was screaming with poohs and wees, took him to vets and they just extended his course of deprim, it continued for about 5 days, but now at 7 days, he is passing normallly.
they didn't do an xray for stones, but he had two ultrasound scans, with nothing showing.

hope you get your hunny sorted.

"Back teeth too long?"

Vertically or horizontally? I become even more wary at this point!

no problem with syringing her to day she volutarily took her medicine, i dint even have to hold her still just held it in front of her and she started taking it herself.
think shes realised no point fightin it cos its happenin whether she likes it or not lol or it could be the treats i give her wen I'm done lol.

As for her teeth i have no idea about the back teeth 2 b honest but the vet seemed to know quite a bit about pigs, but il look it up

Hi
Please see your vet ASAP.
I had similar problems earlier this year with my Darcy,he had an xray, contrast xray and open bladder surgery in the end.Nice bill but worth it.
He has made a full recovery so there is light at the end of the tunnel, hope your vet can sort you out very soon.
Darcy and all my pigs are on a low calcium diet now including filtered water, the cambridge trust were very helpful with diet sheets.
Tip for medicine Darcy liked his with a very small drop of orange juice and my pigs have tiny amount of live yoghurt around mouth when on antibiotics.

hi everyone

Sorry i havnt been on in a while.
My piggy is finished with the medicine and unfortunatly it hasnt seemed to of worked :(

I think the vet knew it was bladder stones all along to be honest so i will be taking her back, I'm very worried as I'm a student and have very limited financial means and I'm worried about not being able to pay for her operation. Does any one have an idea of what it will cost me if your pigs have been through similar?

can not tell you hope much but a pdsa or rspca clinic may be able to help you with reduced costs?
