Crusty red spot on belly

D

DM031020

Hi there, just went to hold my skinny pig Stella, and noticed this weird mark/rash on her belly. It's a reddish circle with dry skin on it. I'm new to this form and don't know how to upload pictures so if someone could let me know how to do that it would be much appreciated. I'm seriously concerned that it is ringworm, but it could just be a scratch or something, and need advice asap as she lives with 4 other females and we don't know what to do.

Thank you for any help!
-Tilly

Tilly, you need to take your photo and then from this site look for the green attach File (the one with the paper clip) button just below on the left, this should take you to your photo library, select the photo you want and select Done
I use an iPad so it may be different depending on what you use

There's no paper clip icon or the simular one on the post options just asks to insert a Web address. I'm very confused 😂

Welcome to the forum.
You need to get Stella to a vet for a proper diagnosis.
Don’t panic about things.
Find out what the problem is and then you will know what you’re dealing with.
You will find a lot of support here

Hi

You can use the picture icon on the top bar, upload via Attach Files from underneath your post or upload elsewhere and copy/paste across.

But please take a deep breath and calm down. Whatever it is, it not the end of the world by an means.
We would appreciate it if you didn't use upper case in your titles and rather mentioned the problem in it. Your thread is not seen any sooner just because you shout help. I have changed your title for you.

Thank you so much. I'll try and figure out how to post the photos. I just upload them to my Instagram and will try and share that or something. Thanks for the advice and help!

Thank you! I'm just confused and can't figure out how to get pics up because that would be really useful xx

When you write a message in the box along the bottom you will see 4 green boxes.
One is marked ‘Attach files’.
This is the one to click on to attach photos from your library.
What device are you using?
This is the way I do it from my iPad.
From my Mac it’s a copy the photo and paste it in job.

One of the three methods in my post should work. Just calm down and take your time. The problem won't get any worse with you doing that. Make sure that the picture is well lit and clear so we can really see what is getting on.

PS: PLEASE remove your postcode from your location ASAP for your own protection. Posting your county will help us but protect your privacy. it also saves us having to waste time with googling where you are. Please be aware that we are a public space where unregistered members can read what you are posting.

So I've uploaded them to my piggie Instagram. Would you be able to just take a look and offer some advice.

I don't get 4 green boxes. All mine says is 'post reply' and 'preview'

Can you please copy/paste the picture across and stop plastering your personal information all over a public area.

Please firstly see whether you can copy your picture on instagram and then paste it into your next post first.

Then you click on your username on the top bar. Click on account details on the menu that comes up. Then go to location (the first item in account details) and change it to your county. Only you can access your personal details.

I will delete your instagram username in the previous posts for you to make sure that you are safe.
PS: Unfortunately not everybody on here is on instragram, me included.

When you’re trying to find a way around an unfamiliar forum and worrying about a piggy it can seem a bit much.
Everyone is trying to help you but also keep you safe online

Here is my other pig. She's had quite dry and flakey skin since we got her and quite early on had abit of scabbing on her nose. It went away though and came back again recently but had gotten much worse this time compared to last.20201002_221812.webp20201002_221828.webp

I’m afraid I think you are dealing with a case of ringworm in both piggies.
Please have a read of our ringworm guide Ringworm: Hygiene And Pictures
It is important that you read this guide as this is transmissible to humans.
Please do get your piggies to a vet for formal diagnosis and treatment. Please do not home treat on spec as you need a formal diagnosis and also the right treatment at the right strength.

Hi!

Please have your piggy seen by a vet for potential ringworm or another fungal problem; if possible tomorrow during regular opening hours. it is NOT an emergency.
If your piggies are new, you can reclaim the vet cost from the shop you bought them from. In the case of a backyard breeder, you have a more difficult stand but you can report them to your local council over trading standards.
New guinea pigs: Sexing, vet checks&customer rights, URI, ringworm and parasites

But please don't panic. With the right diagnosis and treatment and especially with the correct hygiene you can get on top of it within a week or two. :tu:

Key to that are the comprehensive hygiene measures in our ringworm care guide. They tell you step by step what you need to do re. disinfection, preventing any other piggies coming down with it, preventing yourself from coming down with it and making sure that there are no hidden spores your cured piggy can carry forward - thankfully that is a bit easier with skinnies than with furries. The next week will be a bit busier than planned but if you follow the guide, the problem will never get past the nuisance level.
We know that our hygiene measures work from our own piggies and in nearly 15 year we have had time to find and sort all the potential problems. The last time I had ringworm carried in, I managed to keep to the single infected piggy in a room with then 30 others although deep cleaning the whole piggy room wasn't quite fun...
Here is our very practical, precise and step by step ringworm guide if you get that diagnosis. Best bookmark it now, so you know you can find it again. Ringworm: Hygiene And Pictures

We are here for any further questions but would appreciate if you kept everything to this ongoing support thread so we can keep all information together, know what has been said before, ruled out and recommended to help you most efficiently in your specific situation.
Unlike social media, we have the ability to provide personalised support for as long as necessary. You can pick up this thread anytime on the home page of the forum under either Find Threads/Your Threads or under Search Forum if you type in your username. Both buttons are just underneath the large green bar across the top.

PS: I have also changed your title so that the other posters know what the problem is and those with personal experience with fungal skin infections can also help with further tips or experiences.

Wow, this was so hopeful and helpful! Thank you so much! We've just quarantined the 2 infected piggies, and have looked I've the other 3 and we believe that they don't have it but can't be too sure. Tomorrow we will do a full clean. I will then book a vet appointment asap. Do you recommend bathing them all or is that not necessary? Also, when taking them to the vet is it recommended to take all 5 just incase they are all infected or just the 2 that are definitely infected? Many thanks.

Please only take the two infected ones. make sure that you are careful to wash your hands and gel them with some disinfectant after every contact.
Your others are likely infected but the period between infection and outbreak is 10-14 days. If you catch them in this period, then they won't develop it. You can find the details as to how in our VERY comprehensive ringworm guide. Rest assured that we have thought of everything! You won't find any better and clearer advice anywhere else.

Best order some vet grade F10 disinfectant tonight; it is the only disinfectant that is proven to kill ringworm spores and will be your best friend. You can find it sold widely online when you google.
I would also recommend that you get some nizoral antidandruff (i.e. antigfungal shampoo) from the pharmacy for yourself so you are all set up with the extras you won't get from your vet and can hit the floor running. If your vet prescribea a dip (like imaverol/eniconazole or a medicated shampoo (like malaseb, for instance), then please use that for the baths recommended for any companions. If your vet prescribes oral itrafungol, then use the nizoral shampoo for the safety bath of the companions. I would recommend to wait with the deep clean and the companion bath until you have got the F10 so you can do both at the same time and start with a clean slate and only having to do it once. ;)
But please read our ringworm guide first as it will answer all your questions!

PS: I haven't got a skinny picture with ringworm. Would I have your permission to add it to our collection of ringworm pictures of how a course typically runs in the last chapter of the ringworm guide?

Okay thank you so much for all of the information! It's extremely helpful! And yes, definitely feel free to use the photos 😊

Thank you! The picture will be of course credited to you.

It may be actually helpful if you could document the development over the coming week (which should normally be enough to stop the ringworm; 10 days in a bit worse case) so we can incorporate your pictures into our guide and help to reassure another skinny owner sometime down the line... ;)

But please rest assured that you can get on top of it pretty easily if you are thorough and follow our guide. Thankfully this year our hygiene recommendations look a lot less over the top than in previous years!

I just wanted to check that these are the right products before I order:
