Hi

So one on my piggies is making this weird low croaking noise. Generally as she is just going about her day and investigating, and also when she's eating. She'll make it for a while and then cough/splutter and then it goes away. Still able to squeek and make the usual higher pitched noises.

Took her to the vet, he said he couldn't hear anything on her chest, her heart was beating fast but he said given the situation of where she is he wasn't too concerned, and of course when I took her she wasnt making the noise. Typical. He said to stop using straw in her bed which I have done and it doesn't sound like it's made any difference.

She's still eating and drinking her usual amounts, still very active and mischievous!

Here's a link to a video of her and the noise

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

I found it difficult to hear the sound but she sounds like one of my piggies who has similar choking issues at times when eating. My vet couldn't find anything until we did an x ray and there is a mass at the back of her throat. We are treating her with antibiotics and metacam. There are many causes of this kind of problem so you might to need to keep getting her checked out.

He did try to get a look in her throat with a thin light but she wasn't having any of it!

Bless her, did they say what the mass is? Are the antibiotics working for her?

Just had a good listen, sounds a bit bunged up to me. Bit crackly. I had a pig that constantly was like this, he had chronic problem with his nasal passages. But he would have a snotty nose and a runny eye. He lived like it

We aren't sure. It's either an abscess or a tumour. She has improved a little but still snuffly

It just seems like it's come from no where. Some days she sounds better than others, but today she sounds especially croaky! No snotty nose, but does have one eye that gets milky gunk at the corner which I think is a blocked tear duct. Vet had a look in it and did a stain test and nothing showed. Looks like another trip to the vets may be in order. At least I now have a recording of her noises!

Have you looked up chronic rhinitis?

Hi, couldn't really hear her croaking sound but I have a 4 or 5 month old sow cinnamon who makes a loud croak or cough after long periods of time. But has displayed no other symptoms like your pig.

2 things I could think of for mine is 1 their new water bottle is crap and isn't dispensing enough water so I gave them a bowl until I can put in a mount for their older bottle or 2 she just has a sore voice because our newest addition a 2 month old peppermint loves getting everyone riled up every time the fridge opens, plastic unwraps, or the front door opens and has been wheeking waaay more frequently then she's used to.

Not sure what your bedding situation is but I use fleece and wash it every 4 or 5 days while spot cleaning daily.

I'm gonna check her again when I get home from work and if it hasn't improved ill take her to the vet and keep you in the loop.

I have looked this up and it does sound like what it could be! It wouldn't surprise me if she'd got something up her nose to be honest. She loves getting her face right in the hay to chow down and get her hands right in the holder and sweeps any last little bits remaining out, normally into her face!

She still had the croak last night and this morning, followed with a few sneezes/coughs while tucking into her veggie breakfast.

She is the noisiest out of my two, very vocal! This could be it! I use wood shavings, non scented and dust extracted. I stopped using straw in the bedding area as I thought this could be it, but it has made no difference.

Mention it to the vets and see if you can get a diagnosis. It can be managed. If it is that

Another possibility is hay dust. My Gf accidentally spilled an entire bag in their feeder and it was near the bottom so mite be hay dust. Have been home for a few hours no change in appetite weight or attitude and have been home for a few hours without a croak. Will keep monitoring cinnamon but I think shell be okay.

So just thought I'd do a little update. Croaking has died down quite a bit over the past couple of days and only really comes on when she's eating. Still coughing/choking but I really just think it's at the rate she wolfs her food down, she was even still trying to eat new bits of food whilst having a good cough. I took her away from it till she calmed herself! It's like she's never been fed!
Still happy, running, popcorning. Still no sniffles or crusty nose, no wet or runny eyes.

I do still think I'll take her to the vets just to be sure, I'm a worrier. But I guess as long as she seems happy and hungry that's the main thing!

Thats good to hear👍 do you think an xray might help see if theres is anything going on inside? But obviously you dont want to put her through g.a

Yea I think so, and I know it sounds bad but it's money I can't really afford so close to Christmas. I will go in the new year. I have moved the hay holder slightly higher so she cant just stick her face in it and get her paws in to sweep all the hay dust and bits out and into her face. We'll see how that goes!
Thanks for everyone's advice and suggestions

Have you read the various suggestions made to the original poster in this thread?
There is helpful advice.
It may be just eating too fast but it is always worth a vet check to ensure there is no underlying medical reason.
