New Born Pup
Hi
First of all, I’m a fairly new piggy owner, definitely not an expert - I’m just sharing my experience, this most definitely isn’t meant to be advice.
My point is - if your piggy is ill, please see a tropical vet expert - this has made the difference between life and death!
I want to share my experience of my 3 year old sow Midnight, being poorly and what I have learnt as it might help other piggy owners. I’ve been reading a lot of advice on the Guinea Pig Info pages, written by Forum Admin/Experts as well which has been essential support.
I noticed last Thursday Midnight wasn’t eating, so I got her to the vets on Friday. They found ovarian cysts, prescribed 0.3ml of metacam (pain relief) daily and told me to administer Critical Care (she didn’t specify any particular make) although they didn’t have any in stock. She also mentioned I could give Midnight calpol, although she couldn’t figure out the dose. She tried to check Midnight’s teeth but struggled so gave up. The vet also said I needed a tropical vet specialist and referred me to Cheshire Vets. I spoke to Cheshire Vets that evening (Friday evening) and made an appointment for Monday morning. I then managed to get hold of some critical care - specifically Recovery Plus - which is basically powdered pellets. I also found advice on the Forum for calpol dose - 0.2ml of the INFANT calpol.
Midnight refused the recovery plus, so Saturday morning I was very worried and contacted Cheshire Vets who said to bring Midnight in straight away.
I saw Christian at Cheshire Vets - a tropical pet expert - he has been amazing.
This is what I have learnt:
The correct dose of metacam (for Midnight) should have been 0.4ml twice daily.
Recovery Plus is only a supplement, not a complete food, Christian prescribed Emeraid IC Herbivore - this is a white powder, a complete food and completely different to Recovery Plus - Midnight was very happy to eat it
Christian also prescribed Emeprid - to keep Midnight’s digestion going
Christian doesn’t think the ovarian cysts are the problem, they feel like they are fluid rather than hormal. He did look at her teeth, the molars are a little overgrown, but not too bad, probably not the cause of the problem, but not helping.
Midnight has improved the last 24 hours, she’s taking the meds, started pooping again and is more alert. Syringe feeding every 2-3 hours with the Emeraid. Today, Christian is going to file her molars and take bloods. If anyone can make her better Christian can.
I just wanted to share this, because the Forum has always been so helpful to me, and I thought my experience might help others.
Also huge thank you to Christian at Cheshire Vets - amazing care and knowledge.
Piggy hugs
