So not sure I have posted in the right place.
We recently rehomed two guinea pigs from a friend of a friend. I quickly realised that one was pregnant. She has had 5 babies and one has crinkly fur. Both parents are smooth haired. Just wanting more information as to how common this is.
Thanks

They carry genes from previous generations which are not necessarily seen in the parents, so it will be an ancestor was a teddy or similar. Someone will be better at identifying the breed.
Are you sure both your original piggies are girls? If not, it's possible mum will already be pregnant again unless you separated them before the birth. There is some great advice in the forum tab at the top of the page which will tell you all you need to know about sexing, babies, pregnancy etc. Welcome to the forum x

Thanks for your reply Reenie. I did a little research when I found out one was pregnant and and yes the other was male so he was removed before the birth and has a new home.

Hi and welcome!

Please take the time to read our comprehensive information on mother and baby care, including diet advice: Pregnancy & Baby Care Guide's

I hope that you have separated the male asap and double-checked his gender? Sows come into season within hours of giving birth. Back-to-back pregnancies are especially hard on any sows with the risk of complications rising sharply with every consecutive pregnancy.
Please also be aware that you need to separate any male babies at 3 weeks to prevent further pregnancies with mother and/or sisters.

Babies can look like any of their ancestors or be a mix of two of them. Looks can jump generations (in humans, too!); siblings can have very different colours and marking, and be different breeds, too. It all depends on what has gone into them over the generations.

Very cute! A lot of guinea pigs are mixed breeds and any number of genes not visible in the parents can make an appearance in offspring. You will have to wait for the coat to grow in to see how long the fur grows, that will give you a better idea as to what the adult piggie will look like!
