Cranberry Juice - Where Can I Get It From?

Hi

My guinea Pig Lola has just started (again) a course of antibiotics for suspected UTI, this time for 3 weeks, not just a week. My vet suggested trying unsweetened Cranberry Juice as well. Does anyone know what brands are good to use as looking in the supermarket I am confused to which ones are 'unsweetened', some so 'no added sugar' and if there are any at all readily available!

I bought a small carton of this ones from Sainsbury's, but am thinking it is the wrong type and haven't tried it yet, and it's from concentrate :-(

Just wondered if anyone had purchased any (UK) and could help. Also I understand it is best diluted with a little water but not sure what ratio and what quantity to give her?

No added sugar is fine - cranberries contain sugar naturally. You can try a mix of half juice and half water if you wish to; cranberries are also a good source of extra vitamin C, which you want to give in that situation. Let the piggies drink from the syringe as much as they will take. If they really hate the juice, just give water. Use 1ml syringes and give about half a syringe in one go; that way, you avoid things going down the wrong way.
The more fluid you can get in at the beginning, the better, as that will help to flush out the bacteria and relieve the symptoms. Mild diuretic veg like dandelion, cucumber and lettuce can also help with that, but please don't overfeed to the extent that they end up with diarrhoea! Hopefully, you will find that the acute symptoms subside noticeably within 2-3 days, but you need to complete the full course of antibiotics.

If you can, get some avipro-plus probiotic from an online provider; it is the only one without added calcium and therefore the best for any bladder/urinary tract issues. But in a pinch, a probiotic from a pet shop will do. Give a pinch about 1-2 hours after the antibiotic to help prop up the guts and the appetite. Weigh any ill piggy daily instead of weekly.

I hope that Lola will feel better in herself soon!

Not really sure what is up with Lola, she only sometimes squeaks whilst going for a wee, and then other times nothing, but she does wee several times on the floor. But on Thursday after being on the floor, I noticed her urine had blood in it, so we took her to the vets on Friday, with a urine sample, which the vet tested and it has no blood it in. I am thinking that by the end of weeing she is trying to strain, hence the blood, so it could be a UTI. I will try the 3 weeks of antibiotics and is she is still 'not quite right', then the vet has suggested an x-ray to check for stones, which I hope it is not :-( The vet checked her other and cannot find any visible signs of anything wrong. And she is really perky and happy.

She has also started making a really loud squeak (not all the time) when Molly (t'other pig) bothers her or I go to pick her up, and I am not even touching her! But she is generally absolutely fine and does not seem to be in pain at all.

I am adding Avi-pro to the water bottle, which they are both drinking well from.

Thing is she is quite a mental pig anyway ;-)

When I've given cranberry juice, I have bough standard 'human-grade' cranberry juice at the grocery store (100% cranberry with no added sugar.) I then would dilute it with water. However, my bladder pig doesn't like it, though her cagemate thinks it's great stuff, so we haven't bothered for awhile!
 
Thank you! I can't seem to find any that is 100%, they all seem to be from concentrate, and then they are like 25% Cranberry from concentrate, confused! The Holland and Barratt one seems very expensive, £14.99 - just to use a small amount!

We buy the Ocean Spray variety for Harley our bladder piggy - he loves it :)
What ABX have you been prescribed just out of interest ? Septrin is the better one for suspected UTI/Cystitis etc. and Metacam is a great analgesia and anti inflammatory.
We also use half a capsule daily of Cystaid for Harley to help line his bladder wall and ward off any nasty bugs...could you discuss this with your Vet maybe ?
Paws crossed it's not a stone - grrr - bloomin things :rant:

Maybe I will get some of the Ocean Spray then and try that. Lola is on Septrin for 3 weeks, I had Metacam before for her but this time just the antibiotics. I will see how she is after this course, I don't think a week was long enough .... that's what I am hoping! The vet said she is quite young to have a stone but she's not ruling it out. She doesn't seem to be in pain though and isn't squeaking whilst weeing like she was a few weeks ago and doesn't look uncomfortable.
 
Our boy was only 10 months old when he had a stone removed, is coming 4 yrs old and touch wood, has been ok but needed a bladder flush last year for debris as he has never been a good drinker until we started the Cranberry so his increased drinking habits I believe has helped enormously :)
Agree that a week is not long enough as many infections are stubborn so reoccur, 3 weeks is about right (seems you have a good Vet)
I have heard of sows passing stones naturally as their urethra is wider but only an x-ray will be conclusive.

All mine have sainsburys unsweetened cranberry from concentrate - costs £1 - I only put about 1 - 2 inches in the bottle and then top up with water.
 
Do people give their guinea pigs cranberry juice even if they do not have a UTI? I know that it is brilliant for humans when they have UTi and to prevent them..

I couldn't find any which said unsweetened? This was from the shelf not the fridge, don't want to give it to her if it's the wrong thing? Thanks!

Sorry,getting my supermarkets muddled up - Its Morrisons I get.
 
hi i get mine from lidl, asda, morrisons, sainsburys basically if i shop in one of these stores i always pick up a carton of cranberry juice, i give it as a treat as well as a helping aid.
