you actually i took vet appointment when I heard crackling sounds. But they said she has liquid bloat given injections for two days and told that have lung infection given antibiotics also and on 10 th day 90% crackling sounds gone. But vet said to take appointment at another vet because he don't have particular equipments. So,then I took appointment at another vet he said no liquid bloat only little gas and there is no pneumonia. So he given bloat medication as well as gut soothing medication. But,in this entire process her poop good and eating well very active only that crackling sounds. I don't know what to do so i posted my problem in facebook one of the person said that "now a days treating respiratory problem is very typical better give 3 weeks antibiotics it will helpfull even it's not showing symptoms in X-ray just try". But she is active eating good and poop also good. One main thing crackling sounds not same everytime they are fluctuating. Please help me should i give antibiotics for 3 weeks. What dose are you giving currently? Did you have the medication prescribed? You mention crackling sounds in the title, what has your vet diagnosed your guinea pig with?
I see you are in India, is your vet knowledgable about guinea pigs? I know it’s quite hard to find experienced guinea pig vets over there.
I can’t offer much help, but the more information you provide, the better our members can help
Hi
The dosage depends on the severity of symptoms as well. There is no fixed dosage but a band in which a vet can compute the dosage based on weight and the particular illness and its severity. Urinary problems usually require a higher dosage but if your respiratory symptoms are particularly severe or indication a pneumonia rather than a URI sitting in the upper airways then you vet may want to max out.
I hope that explains why we cannot tell you what to give just based on your own hom
you i can understand but here in India at my place there is no particular guinea pig vet. That's why I asked and one of the vet given antibiotics but i have doubt is that dose can cure crackling sounds.
Thank youI am afraid we can’t.
Only a qualified vet can prescribe and give information on dosages.
If antibiotics were helping and the crackling sound was nearly gone then it seems like the dose you’re giving is correct as the antibiotic was working. If the crackling sounds have returned since you stopped the Antibiotics then that would indicate a longer course was needed. Some URIs can be hard to get rid of and I have seen people recommend to give the antibiotics for 3 weeks on the forum in the past and sometimes even longer! I have given them for three weeks too in the past when dealing with a stubborn URI. It’s good that the vet could see no pneumonia!you actually i took vet appointment when I heard crackling sounds. Is it possible to have such symptoms(crackling sounds) without showing any problem( like pneumonia)on x-ray? Thank you very muchHi
If you are dealing with an infection of the upper respiratory tract (URI), which affects the nose/sinuses/throat/bronchia, then it will not show up on an x-ray. What you see with pneumonia on an x-ray is the fluid build-up in the lungs or any other changes to the lungs/structure.
Your vet should be able to hear with their stethoscope where the infection is sitting without the need for an x-ray. That is something that any vet is trained to do and is not species specific. Even you can get a rough idea whether the crackling is coming from the head area, the throat area or the chest when you hold your ear against your piggy's body.
If symptoms recur after a round of antibiotics, then either the course has been too short or the antibiotic prescribed has not been the most effective; only after that has been excluded would I start looking at other possible areas. Please see the vet again for another round of enrofloxacin/baytril.
PS: Please accept that our forum is UK based with much stricter regulations re. self-diagnosing and medicating. Our forum is not part of social media and we have to respect those regulations. None of us is a vet or can reliably diagnose without access to your piggy.
Actually here in India we don't have guinea pig specialist that the big problem i have and it is killing me. Since two months i am taking her to vet but there is no use. She don't have pneumonia. I think sounds comming from head area. Is enrofloxacin/baytril usefull to treat head like nose, sinus, throat, bronchia area. Because, before i have given baytril for 10 days. At that time crackling sounds almost like 90% sounds went away. When I stopped they were came back. Is that enrofloxacin usefull plz let me know.Hi

Does inside teeth growth of guinea pig cause crackling sounds.Enrofloxacin (better known as baytril if you want to do your own research re. guinea pigs although enrofloxacin is the active substance) is in many countries the only licensed antibiotic for guinea pigs and other rodents. There are however some other antibiotics that can be safely prescribed, like trimethoprim-sulfamethodazole based antibiotics, doxycyline or azithromycin as a very strong last ditch antibiotic.
Please note that vets around the world are increasingly using cheaper generic medications, which means loads of different names for the same medication; you have often different generic brand names in India to the ones used in the UK and North America. You will have to google via the active ingredient for information.
The big no no for rodents is any penicillin based antibiotic.

It's not grinding sound. it's crackling. Both crackling and grinding sounds are different na. It's from head area. Are you hearing crackling from the chest or teeth grinding?
They can sometimes grind their teeth if they are having dental problems.
Crackling in the chest will not be because of dental issues.
URI on its own doesn't cause dental overgrowth unless your piggy is eating less/losing weight for quite some time and you are not support feeding enough silica rich fibre. I am feeding hay everyday and daily veggies carrot, capcicum and tomoto and cucumber. And coriander leaves( cilantro)and also pellets. But the problem is crackling sound. I took an appointment at two vet doc's one said she has liquid and another said bloat. One of the vets was given antibiotics for 10 days but it only cured 90%. Then said to stop but now I have started antibiotics with the help of facebook comments. And she said to use it for 3 weeks.URI on its own doesn't cause dental overgrowth unless your piggy is eating less/losing weight for quite some time and you are not support feeding enough silica rich fibre. In more severe cases of respiratory infection, the effort to keep breathing can mean loss of appetite; add in that an antibiotic can also affect the gut microbiome, this is a double whammy for a guinea pig. Your guinea pig however is not in that class. I would however recommend life-long weekly weigh-ins on your kitchen scales.
Weight - Monitoring and Management
The griding teeth at the back of the mouth are worn down by the silica in grass/hay fibre, which makes over three quarters of what a guinea pig eats in a day (75-80% of what guinea pigs eat should be hay/grass). Silica is very abrasive and the rate at with guinea pig molars grow has evolved in a perfect balance with with the mainstay of their diet.
Veg and pellets together only replace the supplementary role of wild forage. Teeth will only overgrow if the diet is too low in hay/fresh grass, if your piggy is off their food for a longer time and is not chewing enough, if there is pain issue in the mouth/jaw that causes them to not chew evenly or if there is a misalignment of the teeth so they do not meet properly when growing out. If your guinea pig has not constant access to fresh hay, please review your diet.
