Hi everyone, so we just noticed one of my boys Eggs has a lump on the side of his neck. I have some spare metacam so I gave him some, he’s acting completely normal and doesn’t seem to be in pain and eating normally and everything.

My dilemma is: what is the lump. One of my deceased boys Kip had a lump on the exact same spot for at least a year or 2 before he died, Kip was nearly 7 when he died but his death was unrelated to the lump. The lump was filled with dark blood, kept coming back when drained too and seemed to be completely benign. I was never given a name for it, but I think it was some type of benign tumour called “cutaneous neoplasia”. I don’t know for certain, but it’s the most similar I’ve ever found to explain it. Never seemed to cause him any pain or discomfort at all even though it was quite large

But, I’m worried incase it could possibly be an abscess. Dilemma here is, it’s 1am where I am now and tomorrow I won’t have a ride to the vet until at least 5:30pm, when my vet is closed. The on saturday I have an appointment I’ve been waiting months for (I have MS and very immunosuppressed) that I won’t be back until at least 1:30pm from. If it wasn’t such an important appointment that god knows when I’ll be able to get again, I would cancel just to take him.

So leaves me the question, would this qualify enough to even get him an out of hours appointment tomorrow? Or would a possible abscess be okay until Saturday afternoon?

For added context, he lives with another boy Ollie but behind bars so I don’t think a bite is very likely. The lump is also fairly firm, and I can’t see any puncture wound and definitely no blood unless he managed to clean it before I spotted it. I added a photo but honestly it’s hard to spot it unless you look from certain angles. I’d estimate he’s about 1-1.3 years old, and around 960g. He’s a small piggy, I adopted him last year from a situation where he wasn’t wanted. I’ll check on his weight again tonight but everything seems normal otherwise, no weird urine and poops look good. Currently munching on some hay and had lots of peppers so his appetite is unchanged too, and he’s not having difficulty walking

Most of the forum experts are in bed now and I'm afraid I have no experience. I will keep an eye on your thread and bump it in the morning if needed. He's lovely btw.

Thank you so much, I figured mostly everyone else was in bed too at this hour! He really is sweetest little guy

It’s hard to know with situations like this! Id just advise to keep a tight eye on him, if he suddenly shows signs of pain/not eating or the lump suddenly gets a lot bigger I’d opt for an emergency appointment.

Right, really is hard to know! I’ll be home all day tomorrow so will keep a very close eye on him, but I’m thinking of calling my vet in the morning to see if they’d be willing to see him out of hours anyway.

No a lump is not an out of hours emergency. It should be seen quickly if it is growing quickly (and they can expand within a day) causing pain but it’s not an out of hours emergency.

Any other lump can be seen in normal consultation hours and can wait a few days

Thanks everyone, I thought my vet would have an opening tomorrow afternoon but soonest they do is Monday morning. I’d much rather him be seen way sooner and feel so nervous/bad leaving it so long but I’ll keep a really close eye for anything unusual and get him in as an emergency if anything looks off.

I have some leftover Metacam from my other piggy’s corneal ulcer that my vet said is fine to use for a couple months after opening so I’ll give him .2mls of a syringe every day leading up too

Eggs is off to the vet in a few hours (regular vet, unfortunately nearest exotics is a couple hours away) so I’ll update with what they say about his lump incase anyone’s interested!

Admittedly a little nervous but trying not to freak out about it. The lump definitely seems bigger to my eyes but still very loose under the skin to the actual tissue, almost like a small ball is under the skin, but he’s an absolute trooper and no changes to his appetite or anything, he’d take the entire bag of critical care if I let him.

Quick nail trim before his appointment!

Oh bless him. Brave boy. I hope it clears up now. 🤞🏻

Thank you, me too! Eggs is one of the 5 piggies I’ve had in the past few years and not really any experience with abscesses so I feel like I’m a bit out of my depth especially with keeping it open and cleaning it, does anyone know if there’s an abscess care article on this forum?
