Could it be mites or ringworm?

Hiya, my gp’s both have a patch on the back that looks like a patch of dirt but after looking closer I think the hair is actually thinning & they look a bit dry too. I haven’t noticed them acting any differently; they’re still eating & running around as usual. I’ve been reading up on the boards about mites and ringworm but I’m not sure what it is. Is there anything I can be looking for to determine what it is?

I've got them in at the vets at 5.30 today but I just wondered what you guys think as I know there are lots of very knowledgeable piggie people on here :)p

Thanks for any help,
Lyndsay x

Hi Lyndsay,

I've no experience of ringworm only mites and my pig had a red area on the back, flaking skin like dandruff and it looked quite raw through scratching.

Don't allow the vet to do a skin scraping there is no need. My vet actually used cellotape and got some of the little monkeys on the sticky side and had a look under the microscope.

Cuzzy was treated with 3 injections, however some vets just give the 2 injections, some will give spot on.

Thanks Louise, it sounds like what they have as I checked Ralphie and he has sort of white flakey bits on him but Choccie just struggled to get back to the grass!rolleyes

I've just been to P@H to get a carrier for them and the lady that served me said it sounds like ringworm as it's a sort of ring shape....she near enough told me that if my gp's have it then I'll have it too...just what I don't want to hear!

The vets I go to seem really good with little furries so hopefully I'll get my boys sorted tonight. Thanks again,

Ah good luck, I'll have to research ringworm I wouldn't know what it looked like. Keep us posted. x

good luck

wishing you luck with your piggies, if it is ring worm you don't get to go to school or work as it is easily caught.
i know when i had it when 10 i had 3 weeks of school :<>:<>:<> hoping your vet fixes your piggies up and they are running around and causing mischief again in no time. sending :)p:)p and x>>x>>x>>

I hope I don't get it then as I'm getting married 2 weeks tomorrow!

Fingers crossed that it's mites......although I wish the poor gp's didn't have anything, bless them!

hoping the piggies are fine and good luck at the vets. sending hugs and healing vibes :rose:rose:rose and many x>>x>>x>>

when i had ring worm i had to go to work! lol mine was covered up though it was on my belly, you can only catch it if you touch the infected area then touch something else.

hope your piggies dont have it!

It doesn;t sound like ringworm, in guine apigs it usually doesn't show up as a ring. Ringowmr usually starts off as bald patches around the face, on my piggie it was around his eye. The skin isn;t usually flaky, and you don;t really notice thinning of fur, with ringowmr I think the guine apigs actually scratch the fuir out, because it is terribly itchy, my pig scratched so much he uised to makle himself bleed.

So I think what your iggie has is mites which humans can't catch so I think your safe. I caught ringworm off my guinea pig, it was horribley itchy and it was on the inside of my leg and kept rubbing against my jeans with killed, it cleared up in a couple of weeks after getting an anti-fungal cream from my doctor.

Just to be safe wash yoru hands thoroughly after handling your guine apig, and keep handling to a minimum, although it does sound like mites more than ringworm to me :)

Good luck at the vets :)

Hi again, we've been to the vets and my boys have mites (although I think the vet called it mange at first :{) They've both had drops put on them in 2 different places but I can't remember what the drops were called. We're back again in a week for a 2nd lot of drops then a 3rd if they need it but the vet says it should hopefully only need 2 lots...fingers crossed.

Thanks for your help, I'm so relieved it's not ringworm as that sounds awful for gp's and humans! Apparently these mites are the 'common' sort so I should be ok but I'll keep cuddles to a minimum.

....and thanks Choloe, I hope it's a lovely day too.....I'll let you know!:))
