Hi all,

I was wondering if any of you had experience of building a guinea pig pen not using wire mesh cube storage (which seems quite expensive and/or hard to come by), but plastic cube storage instead?

There seems to be loads of it up on eBay, all of which looks a bit like this:

On one hand, I'm thinking it might be a good way to build a big, cheap, expandable pig pen, but I'm also concerned that it might be a bit opaque.

Any comments gratefully appreciated

First of all, welcome to the forum. If you're building a big c&c unit you could mix & match eg use the mesh grids at the front & opaque plastic at back & ends. If you only need 4 to 6 grids for front there may be another member who has some spare & willing to sell.

As @Stewybus says its best to mix & Match, this allows you easily attach water bottles etc. Our C & C cages are made up of a combination of wire and solid grids..

As we have members from all the "grid" globe, can you please add your location to your profile. This can be done by clicking on your name, personnal details, add location.. thanks..

this is my old cage, is bigger now with a fleece forest. Does have 2 wire corners so that it would fit the shape of the room but handy for the bottles. The only thing is if you have babies they can get through. I do have one cage where i just pushed holes in the plastic for the water bottle. Mine are on the floor so doesnt matter about visibility. They sell single metal grids on ebay. I got a couple to make hayracks but dont use them .I got mine from vonhaus interlocking systems and it was about 23 quid for about 33 grids and i used cable ties to put them together

My pigs were temporarily in these and my boy chewed a hole try and get at my girls he didnt suceed as I noticed before the hole got big enough. As long as you dont have separated sexes it should be ok though.

Quick question: Why cable ties? Were the little plastic connectors that came with the cubes not sturdy enough for the job? (NB - those Vonhaus ones are just the ones I was looking at)
Thanks

You can use the connectors as well as ties but the connectors can "pop off" so not suffice on their own.

To make the cage fit the space I had to use cable ties and you don't get enough connectors to make the full cage with them.Means you can make different shapes as well. The correx will stiffen it
