My two new boy guineas (Sudoku and Cheeky) are being quite grumpy including ear biting so I have been watching them quite a lot. :) Better than TV:))
I have noticed that they do shake their heads every once in a while - a bit like a dog shake. Not loads but sometimes.
The lady who sold me the guineas did apply a drop of something to their ears and talked about mites from bales of hay when she gave them to us. Being new owners, we did not think much of it but could this explain their grumpiness as well? If it was ear mites would there be more obvious scratching and shaking because it is only accasional at the minute?:{

Thanks for ideas!

Worth a trip to the vets, just incase it is, must be so annoying if your ears keep itching.

I sopke to the vet on the phone yesterday and he said it could well be ear mites but to watch them for the next few days and then take them in at the end of the week. Still head shaking sometimes.

I would book them into your vets tomorrow and have their ears checked. Make sure that your vet is a piggy savvy vet who can deal with exotics (as which piggies are classed at).

In my experience, these problems only get worse if not treated and don't go away on their own. Rabbit ear mites is the most likely contender, as both are shaking their heads. The constant irritation will certainly not help them settle into their new home!

Thanks for the advice re vet. I have chosen an Exotic and Rodent vet but I will try to get an appointment sooner than he suggested. They are still grumpy at times but not quite so much and less rumblestrutting. Just want them to feel a bit more settled and comfortable soon:)

Is there a link between the choice of hay and mites at all?
