Hi everyone, I usually dismiss like little coughs because of them being greedy piggies but ozzys been coughing here and there for about 20 minutes. Is this urgent?

Was Ozzy eating something before? Cocoa snarfs up his food so fast that he has a bit of a coughing fit afterwards. He normally stops after a little bit.

It will hopefully settle down but if not, try to see a vet tomorrow. It could be something that has gone down the wrong way.

Thank you for your responses! He’s stopped now, sorry if I’ve paused any worry. I’ve heard them both have cases of the greedy piggie coughing but it doesn’t usually go on as long as it was, he let out a big cough and then he’d stopped. He’s currently in his pigloo giving me the side eye… he’s probably wondering why I was trying to look in his mouth

I also have a piggy that has coughing fits from eating too fast. At some point I got worried about it and brought it up to my guinea pig expert vet. She said it's rare, but if I ever think my piggy is actually choking, what you are supposed to do is tilt them slightly downward while holding them securely across your arm and gently tap on their back, sort of like a guinea heimlich.

The other week Hexi got into the longest coughing fit I've ever heard her have. I didn't think she was choking, but she was definitely having trouble getting something out. I picked her up as I usually do with her resting across my arm, but held her at a slight downward angle. She did one big cough and stopped after that. I usually let her sort it out herself, but it definitely seemed to help her get it up. She eats a bit slower these days, but I always feel like I have to keep an eye on her because she still coughs occasionally during veggie time.
