Hi there my little cutie Cookie as some of you will know had to have his eye removed, following the operation he had antibiotics at his post op check vet said all clear stop all meds a week later the wound area started to swell quite badly I was asked to send photos and they diagnosed an infection and advised me to buy more antibiotics and give to him for two weeks today I have taken him back and they've said no its an abscess and basically I've wasted two weeks, stressed Cookie who hates the meds and money. They have said they can send a swab off £80 and then more specific antibiotics which by the sounds of it could be quite expensive as the nurse said it might be cheaper to do another operation! Any advice or experience to share? 😢

I’m so sorry Cookie is having problems post op.

I had a piggy with a tooth root abscess. It was lanced, drained and stitched open. He was given a six week course of Zithromax. This is a very good AB for abscesses. It did knock his appetite out though.

Also pain relief was needed to keep him comfortable.

I hope Cookie is soon on the mend.

Gosh 6 weeks Cookie will not be impressed 😢Can I just ask is there anywhere I can find out if what they are charging is reasonable compared to other vets I just think I should get my money back for the previous antibiotics as they misdiagnosed him I'll pay whatever for him for as long as I can but don't want to be overcharged.

Well I think he would have needed antibiotics if it was an infection or an abscess. So it may not have been wasted as such. Also in the early stages it may have looked like a normal infection. Until it gets large with lots of pus in there. Does that make sense?

Yes thank you, they have advised to stop the meds he's on until the results come back but said it might take a week for the results and to apply warm compress twice a day but didn't say for length of time and should the temperature be the same as what I could manage on my eye area or would a guinea pig be more sensitive to temperature? 🤔

If you search “eye abscess” on the forum some threads come up which might have some advice in them. 🤞🏻

So they have taken a swab and sent it off?

They've taken a swab I have to let them know tomorrow if I want it sending off and have further meds or operate again..

How big is the abscess? Pepper’s abscess was 4cm wide. So very big. I don’t think AB alone would have cleared all that gunk. If cookies is small then maybe they would clear it. See what the vet says.

Oh dear Cookie, sending you all a big hug. :hug:Hope you can help Cookie feel better soon.

Morning well I don't really know how big it is as it's inside but you can't see any swelling at all now but at its worst it looked approximately 1.5 diameter maybe. I've added a photo not sure how well you can see it, it's on the left the other photo is a few day's ago as you can see you can't tell now 🤔

Hello gorgeous Cookie 😍

It’s good it’s gone down. Maybe the AB were working? Good luck at the vets.

I am sorry that Cookies eye socket isn’t healing as it should 😞

My Eliza got an infected eye socket when she had an eye removed in 2013. The pus seeped out through the stitches opening the socket up. My vet removed the stitches and left the eye socket open to drain after she’d cleaned it out. We had to flush it out several times a day with a saline solution the vet gave me, a needle and syringe and pick the scab off to keep the socket open as it formed. I won’t like it was gruesome and this went on for several weeks but the infection eventually cleared. She was also on an antibiotic but I’m afraid I can’t remember the name of it as it was 11 years ago but I think it began with R x

My word that sounds awful poor Eliza and poor you think maybe I'm getting off lightly then at the moment. Someone said that provided it continues to drain itself it may clear itself? 🤔

Thank you. It was heartbreaking

The more it can drain itself, the better but you may need to keep the hole open x

Might try it it said for humans or animals 🤔

I’m not sure about that. I wouldn’t want to put soggy bread on an abscess.

OK thank you I didn't just feel desperate to sort his wound out 👍

We understand that.

What I don’t understand is why his pain meds and antibiotics have been stopped - he will need them both to deal with an abscess. I of course understand that finding out the best type of antibiotics to use for the bacteria present but as I’m reading he currently is on no meds to try to deal with it in the meantime. Yes he may need surgery and still then likely antibiotics.
Zithromax is one of the best types for dealing with an abscess.
A warm compress can help bring the pus to the surface but it needs to be able to get out.

I have been thinking of Cookie, how is he?

Did you manage to talk to the vet about pain relief?
