Hey there!

For the past 4 years we have had a few piggies however around 3 months ago we adopted Scruff and Bumble. Bumble was always fairly shy and sheltered and scruff is always full of energy, we were told they were only a few months old and had no illnesses when we adopted them, however. a few weeks after we got them Bumble passed suddenly, he was fine in the morning and then the evening had passed. no symptoms of anything except for, when we had picked him up after he had passed, he had a bit of runny poo stuck to his bum, he had been eating fine and had a varied diet just like everyone else, we moved scruff in with Sheldon in their own section of the C and C as Sheldon was starting to be bullied a little by his cage mate, They got along GREAT, always playing and running together. 2-3 weeks after scruff moves in, we notice Sheldon going quiet and not really eating and then found him with a runny bum, and not eating. we rushed him to the vets and was told it could be many things, and our best bet was to go with some antibiotics and some stuff to help his guts out as he hadn't been pooping at all, we were given Baytril and Ranitidine (I believe it was)
however the same day that night Sheldon passed away. We had been giving him critical care, and it seemed to help to an extent, and we still dont know what the cause was. (This was only on Monday)

However this morning my other half noticed Gizmo and Reuben had gotten a little impacted, he cleaned them up and had asked me to check if they were eating when I got home as they seemed a little...off., however when I was doing their hoover I noticed soft (Not quite runny but much more soft than normal) poops kinda smushed into the fleece, in with Gizmo, Gus and Reuben, Now, Gizmo and Reuben are normally the devours of all veg and life, however, they have barely touched their veggies and having them out for around 30-40 mins after I got home from work, no poops, no pee, now pee can be few and far, however I'm normally guaranteed a poop. Is there anything infectious that Either scruff or Bumble could have brought in. (Reuben has had some Critical care, as he doesn't seem interested in eating (He was asleep when I got him out so this could have been the cause of a small loss of appetite?, Gizmo is nibbling here and there but not LOADS) I'm so worried that this is going to pass on and on to all of them, similar symptoms have happened 3 times now to 3 separate pigs on 3 separate floors of the C and C that dont ever really have contact with each other. Is this something that we're doing wrong or could there be something causing this

Hi and welcome

I am very sorry! It is all our worst nightmare!

Please have the poos lab tested; this is the only way to find out what is going on apart from a post mortem examination.

Hi there and thank you for the swift reply! @Wiebke

I'll see if I can grab any poops! Ashleigh vet centre is a short drive from me, i'll see when I can get an appointment!

Can I use F10 in the wash with my liners? or is bleach okay? I'll be ordering some F10 either way just to know what to do, i'm in a pretty panicky place at the moment, I don't know if we can take another piggy loss so soon.

Is it advisable at all to give him some of the Ranatidine to help his guts? or just keep an eye on if hes eating? and syringe feed if not?

No, as stated on the F10 label you cannot use it in washing machine (too much foaming), but washing your bedding at a higher temperature should do the trick (60 or 90 C).

You can try the ranitidine/zantac if you wish to (but it would be better to speak with your vet first; it may not be the best drug) and step in with syringe feed as soon as necessary. the sooner you can see a vet, the better! (Of course, it is a weekend... )

Hello there,

This does seem suspicious as to an infectious cause but without further laboratory work and vet input nothing can be said for certain. I agree, hygiene would be of the upmost importance here, make sure you talk to a good vet about this about where to go from here. Things like doing a fecal sample and checking over your remaining piggies would be the first step. So sorry you have had to deal with this.

So sorry to here about the loss of your piggies and fingers crossed for your other piggies. Hope you find out what the problem is soon x
