Hi all, just joined up as my piggy seems to be constipated :...
He is just over a year old and we recently (about 2 months ago) had to have his brother put down :( (I took him to the vet with laboured breathing and it was found that he had a large mass in his chest, it was so sad)
When we had the 2 piggies Ben (the one pts) was the dominant pig and would push Robin away when I fed them, now that Robin can eat what he wants and when he wants he has put on a fair bit of weight and I am wondering if I am over feeding him tbh. I give him about an inch of carrot, a cabbage leaf and a small piece of pepper in the morning, he is let out most days to graze on grass and in the evening he gets similar to breakfast. Obviously I feed him various fruit/veg ie at the moment he is enjoying some plums!!
The reason I think he is constipated is that some poo I have found in his cage seems to be quite big, also I have noticed that his back end looks like he has been nibbling at it,no blood or pulling out of fur but just permanently damp. I have tried cleaning his back end with a warmed cotton pad and if I see a poo sticking out I just gently help it on it way
Can someone advise me if I am doing anything wrong please?

He doesn't sound constipated to me. I think he might have anal impaction which can happen a lot in male piggies. Where he seems damp could be where he is trying to pull his poops out. Also piggies eat some of their poops which is perfectly normal. I have found this information for you. I hope it helps. Also there are other people on the forum who have experienced this problem and will probably be able to help you more than I can.

Thanks for that, I have just popped out to have a go but he squeaked like mad and was struggling to get away :( so I will wait for my hubby to get home later then he can hold him whilst I try to clear him out. The link you posted was helpful but makes it sound quite serious, so might pop him to the vets.

Don't worry. Impaction isn't serious, but it's tricky for people who are new to it. If you take him along to the vets they might be able to reccomend some products and show you how to do it properly. It'll make it seem much easier. And you should probably get it checked to ensure it IS impaction and not something more serious. Good luck!

I think it is only serious if he is not cleared out regularly. I don't believe it is life threatening.
