My two boys Tofu (4yo) and Patches (2yo) are determined to chew the plastic correx of their C&C cage

Any plastic is at risk, including but not limited to snugglesafes, bin bags, the dustpan etc, but it’s easier to keep those things covered/out of their way. The correx is the main issue. Tofu has impaction and smaller poops these days (he’s been to the vet) so I don’t want him eating anything to upset things more

I keep them on fleece and I have an extra layer of blankets under the liners to cover the edges. That worked well when it was just Tofu, but since Patches has also decided that plastic is the height of deliciousness I can’t keep them away 😅

Multiple times I’ve caught Patches digging up the blankets to get at the correx. I’ve tried bigger blankets, tucking the ends right under the correx, weaving the ends through the bars - he has still managed to dig them up. I’d be impressed at his perseverance if I wasn’t so worried about his digestion!

I tried those nibble guards on the top edges of the correx but could never get them to stick and found them too fiddly. I also upped the amount of chewable things in their cage (a carrot cottage, paper bags, plenty of hay, chewable tunnels) and they still go for the plastic

I’m wary of chew toys and sticks in general, but are there any piggie-safe products that might give them something else to nibble when the urge to destroy the base of their home kicks in? I can only think they must like the texture but eating plastic cannot be good for them surely! Also hoping to find a better way of securing the fleece so they can’t pull it up

The pictures of innocence (like I haven’t just caught them for the fourth time this week 😂)

I use the 9mm file binders, they slide on fairly easily with 4mm corex. One of my rainbow bridge piggies used to pull the binders off, he would stand and stare at me, defying me to stop him and suddenly he would swoop and yank one off!
The only thing I can think of to fix the fleece would be bull dog clips, the type with the arms that fold down would be safest. I use these to attach vetbed to the ramps and acrylic sheets to the bars of the cages of piggies that climb the bars or chew the bars.
Trying to stay one step ahead of mischievous piggies is so tiring. Good luck!

Hopefully Correx will be replaced by something else soon. One manufacturer, Guinea Loft, is producing disposable water resistant cardboard cage liners. I haven't tried one. Of course, they could cause blockages I suppose, but might be less hazardous than plastic. Getting a liner that is wide enough to go round the outside of the bars and have the edge out of reach might work. The bull dog clips (aka foldback clips) sound good.
