My youngest guinea pig, which is 6 weeks, will not stop poing in the dried food bowl, as she climbs in it to eat although she is now big enough to eat from the outside. At first I thought it was cute, but now it is getting ridiculous as she wees in it too and when i go to empty it out when the poo outnumbers the leftovers, there are massive clumps that must stick together cos of the wee!

Is this a habit of hers i'm going to have to put up with, or can she be stopped from doing this in the future?
I didn't know whether this falls under behaviour or food, i guess it's abit of both?

Thanks :))

when fudge was still a baby she was a nightmare for doing this, she did grow out of it in the end. I just made sure I put several bowls in the hutch so at least the others had non pooed in food to eat, although she did at one point manage to do it in all 3 rolleyes I also found in wilkos they sell coup cups which attach to the side - had to cable tie it on else they tipped the whole bowl over and this stopped her pooping in the bowls.

The boys occasionally manage a poo or two in one of their bowls but they are never as bad as fudge was and it was because she could sit in it being so small and spend all the time there weeing and pooing - she is far too big now :))

try small hamster bowls...that might work! though where there is a will there is a way!

What about a raised bowl? I saw a cute one on Zooplus the other day that sits in a little wooden stand, and Pets @ Home sell a water dish that attaches the the bars of a cage with a wingnut to prevent tipping. Hopefully she's not so determined that she'll do any actual climbing to get in there!
