I'm considering switching from fleece to another sort of bedding, because of the hair build up in my parents washing machine - Mum's starting to get really angry (you wouldn't think I was 20 from this post would you? Haha) and I've tried washing the pig stuff in duvet covers/washer bags but their clothes are coming out covered in hair and they're getting really fed up. I'm reluctant due to the expense, but if it keeps them happy, I'll do it.

My issue at the moment (well, one of them) - Noah is terrible for chewing their correx. I don't know if it's just because of how it's made...as I could get it free, I got a load of signs from an estate agents, cut them down and make my correx base from those. This does mean the bottom's covered in duct tape and whilst he tries to have a go at that when he gets under the fleece, he also likes to chew on the correx. If I switch beddings, there will be nothing covering it - do you think he is likely to chew it then, too, or might it just be a case of how it's made/he wants to get under the fleece and he relates the two? Of course, if I switched, I wouldn't want them exposed to a load of dust tape so would get a new base made, but I don't want to do it if he's likely to chew on it loads and have me switch back anyway.

Secondly, is the bedding I would switch too. Of course, shavings would be the least costly, but I'm concerned due to the reputation it has for drying the piggies skin out and causing breathing issues. As I've never used any bedding other than fleece in my C&C, could somebody give me some advice, taking in to account both cost and how good it is? My c&c is 2x3.5 grids - I can get exact measurements later :)
Just a thought - I have a pair of boars, is this more likely to get stuck in their 'manly bits'? I clean them when needed anyway but I don't want the pigs to be uncomfortable.

I'll still use fleece + towels in their loft, just not downstairs. Not sure about the ramp at the minute, that might stay covered with fleece.

I use newspapers as a base for what ever bedding (sometimes just hay, sometimes puppy pads, sometimes wood shavings and hay - oh the excitement) that stopped Sophie my chewer going for the correx when they were in my C and C.

I have thought about buying value wallpaper linning paper from home base to replace the newspaper as it would be cheaper.

Have you try wiping the washer after each use, and run an empty load?

Yeah it's not making a difference, I've even started hoovering the inside of the washer once it's all dry - no joy. It's obviously in the system and not only is Mum fed up with it but I feel really bad.

Did that stop her going for the raised sides too? I'm trying to picture what you mean - or did you mean it stops her going to the actual floor?

Could anyone that uses bedding other than fleece - e.g woodshavings, straw/hay, paper sheddings let me know how much it general costs them a month? (is shredding up newspaper and putting that in okay or is the ink bad?)

Ooh no I hadn't seen that, £15 for 20kg doesn't seem to bad especially as that includes delivery. Do you think that would last long?

I used to use fleece but now use a bedding called Cavianthus which is a horse bedding.

The cheapest places to get bedding tend to be Equine places as you can get the large bales. The Fitch stuff sounds good though - am thinking of trying it here though I like being able to chuck all their stuff straight into the Green Bin so am not sure yet.

My girls are Correx eaters too - am hoping to change to Lino soon which I plan to secure to the grids with small bulldog clips. Not sure it will work but its worth a try as I will be increasing their cage size soon so need something different to Correx anyway. :))

I want to get some horse bedding, but the downside is I have no idea where equestrian shops are around here - you'd think I would seeing as I live next to an abundance of farms. But I'm too stingy to pay postage if I buy online :)) I know there will be one around here somewhere. If it comes to it, my boyfriends parents have a farm in Chudleigh so I can always follow them on shopping day when they get all their stuff in hope somewhere sells bedding.
I'm half an hour from a Trago which might have it as I know they've started selling horsey stuff but Mum needs the car today so I can only go in range of wherever she needs to go.....which is Pets at Home. And that hurts my bank account!

As a warning, Noah (my little chewer) was all up for eating their lino when I put it in their loft kitchen. He was ignoring his food and just tucking in to that. Hopefully yours aren't as annoying :)) I covered all the edges with wood so if he wants to chew anything up there he can chew that, as I figured lino probably has worse stuff in than correx.

I use vet bed and do hand pre wash in kitchen sink before place it in washing machine. For my 4m2 of dirty vet beds I remove kitchen strainer 2-3 times. So vet bed gets into washing machine hairs free.
