Connectors Vs cable ties...

Just wondering what the pros and cons are for using each of these methods to hold the grids together, when building a C&C cage.

Apart from making the cage very slightly bigger, is there any other advantage to using the connectors supplied with the grids? I've seen that lots of people use ties...is this just because you don't have enough connectors or do you think cable ties make the cage stronger/sturdier?

I've had my grids sitting waiting for about 18 months and am only just getting around to building my new cage at long last! (better late than never, I hope!) :red

Any thoughts please?

Thanks x

I was wondering the same, I've just ordered my c & c stuff.
I was planning on using the connectors and also a tie just for safety lol

I used cable ties in the end, also adding grids as a base & connecting them all in about 3 different places & it seems pretty secure rolleyes

Depends on your situation - how secure it needs to be ( is it going to be a double decker etc ). I'd advise getting a big pack of cable ties to go with the connectors and you'll be able to see what works best for you. Connectors are obviously good if you re-arrange things alot, cable ties are definitely more secure ( less likely to pop out ) but have to be cut and discarded everytime you have a re-arrange ( and you'll probably do it a few times before you're happy with the set up! ). In the space of a few months my C & Cs have been through 3 incarnations, I was glad of both the connectors and the ties! ;)

I use both. Generally I use the connectors on bits that I know/ think I'm gonna wanna change around. Cable ties I use mainly because I ran out of connectors but it does have the added bonus of making it a lot sturdier so on parts that I know will need to be nice and secure I go for the ties. Making it smaller was also very helpful with cable ties as the connectors would have made it too big to fit in the gap I wanted it to go into. I'm not the biggest fan of ties just because I mess up alot and connectors allow for these mistakes to be made.

I found connectors made it not only sturdier but also the cage sat better. I then used cable ties for any over hanging grids or corner grid for extra support.

It will be a double decker, yes (hopefully, if I can figure out how to do it!) I'd like it to be as secure as possible really so will probably use wooden battens under the top floor, for extra strength there.

I must've seen a gazillion C&C cage photos during my time on this forum but still get a mindblock when trying to figure out the intricacies of extra floors and lids....I'm hoping it'll become clear when I actually go to do it (and re-do it, no doubt!)

Yes, you may find it easier working it out in 3 dimensions - I'm like that, I have to have it in front of me before I can figure it out properly! rolleyes

Do you mean that the grid edges all lined up better, nice and flush and perfectly aligned, and weren't lifting up off the floor, all higgledy piggledy?! (if you know what I mean!)

Well I can only read a map if it's turned around to match the direction I'm travelling in and my finger has to be touching the page and following the route....if that's anything to go by lol! :red

Ha ha! Don't all women ( myself included) have to turn maps the "right" way round?! And I actually have a very good sense of direction ( my OH would agree with me ), seems perfectly sensible! :))

Not sure if you saw my recent post but i added an extra level to my C&C on Friday. If you need any help just let me know! It took a few hours but was quite easy really!

I used cable ties for all of it (when adding the new level) as i found them more secure. I also wasn't sure how i'd use the connectors to do it! Just make sure you use ALOT to make it sturdy! I'd get a couple of bags ;)

Here it is:

ps, i used the connectors on the bottom (which i built back in February some time) I would advise to use all of one or the other as like you said at the beginning it does produce a different size. Therefore you have awkward gaps if you use some connectors and some ties!
