This piggy is 3 weeks old tomorrow, I rescued him from a shelter, their vet said he was male. He is to be the new cage mate for my adult male so I want to be absolutely sure he is male before I introduce them in a few weeks, because my absolute nightmare is a surprise litter! I will also be taking him to the vet to confirm…it’s just he is kinda looking like a she to me 😬 the shelter said they would absolutely take them back if the wrong gender.

Hello I’m not a sexing expert. Hopefully someone will be along soon to help you. Until then have a read of this guide.

Good luck.

That shelter doesn’t sound very professional if they can’t sex a piggy correctly.

I do think the shelter is reputable, but the sexed him at 2 weeks old and that can be unreliable. I have read the guide over and over but I’m just still undecided! Thank you!

Thanks for clarifying. Yes it’s tricky to sex them so young.

Can you open the slit slightly and take another picture. Thank you

Hi

My gut feeling is that this could be rather a female but without seeing the inside of the slit or you being able to feel a basmati rice sized penis shaft under the skin above the knob I cannot comment. I would like to be able to see three gender markers before committing.

Does this help? This one looks different than my girls do but they are also not babies! I maybe feel the rice thing? But I don’t super know what I’m feeling for, my boys are adults so they are pretty obvious!

I'd say it looks like a female, but I'm not an expert, so best wait for wiebke or one of the experts to confirm the sex.

Maybe you could tell the shelter about the sexing guide linked above, so they can learn the differences to look for in future. I hope you can find a male friend for your boar 🩵

Thank you, my gut is really saying female too. I have the option to try and bond her to my girls but if I bring her back I will absolutely be bringing some printouts with me!

Hi

Because of my bad eyes, I am using a desk computer and am finding your upside down slit picutes a bit difficult. Could you please flip the pictures around so they are not upside down? It can sometimes be very difficult to make out the gender of babies around 3 weeks; much more than you'd expect. Especially without direct hands-on access.

Have you done the penis shaft feel? Try your own boy first so you know how a penis shaft feels underneath the skin and then try the new baby to see whether it is there or not.

The pictures are not upside down to me so I’m not sure what happened!

Good idea to try on my boy first, even though he is very obvious looking of course! I tried pressing and nothing popped out but 3 weeks is still young!

Here they are again, they aren’t upside down on my end this time either but maybe these won’t be! I cropped one in too to maybe help!

Thank you, but this is definitely a girl now that I can get my eye in.

Unfortunately, my sight is one of the areas that is affected by my very recent just about pre-cancerous brain tumour diagnosis but new glasses will have to wait until I have had treatment and things have stabilised again in my brain. Thank you for your patience.

Thank you! I’m so glad I kept them separated! Thankfully I have girls I can bond her with 🤞 I see a name change coming too! I will go off to find my boy a new friend, and this time I’ll know what to look for!

I’m sorry about that, my mom had cancer (albeit a different type) but the side effects are awful! I did confirm there is no penis shaft, super obvious on my boy and completely absent on this baby!

Thanks again, baby pigs have been prevented!

I am so glad that we have been able to help you and that you have got an alternative option for your little girl. I hope that you stay on with us so we get to see more of your piggies and can get to know them - including a full picture of your little baby girl! Quite a number of us have our own blog threads in Guinea Pig Chat. :)

I would love that, I’m so glad I found everyone on here! I don’t really know many people who own piggies and love them quite the same as I do!

Let me introduce you to Tinsel ❤️ born 12/6

What a little cutie!

She reminds me of my Begw (Welsh for Peggy or 'Little Pearl') who I have sadly had to send on to the Bridge just the other week due to her arthritis getting a lot worse while I was in hospital.
But she has surprised me by living to the good old age to 6 years - considering that Begw was surrendered at just 210g at 8 weeks old as another mis-sexed male baby... ;)

Thankfully I happened to have a neutered boar from the same rescue looking for a new mate, so the two just got on. You can find their bonding video in the guide in the baby bonding section. It was a love that lasted for several years until Dylan's own natural death at 6 years of age...

These black and white babes and their mis-genderings! I hope this cutie gets to spend a long time with me, 6 years is amazing!

Oh I will go watch their video!

I’ve just seen your thread & agree completely that this is a little sow. Thank goodness you kept them separate.
