I just recently discovered today that my pet guinea pig's eye is cloudy with a possibly small sore on the corner of his eyeballs. It was completely fine yesterday, so finding him with his eye in this condition is really shocking. I've checked online and most answers say he has hay in his eye, but upon further examination I haven't found anything so far. He does have another guinea pig alongside him in the cage. Though I doubt it was caused by the other one since they always gotten along since I've got them. No injuries have been inflicted as far I've noticed.

I would bring him to a vet right now but all places I've looked up so far are closed for 4th of July. Is his condition bad enough that I need to desperately find a vet still open today or will a day be a length that is safe and get him checked the next day?

P.s: Sorry if I'm accidentally violating any rules with how I posted. I'm just extremely worried about him and might be making a mistake or two.

Welcome to the forum

Only a vet can make a diagnosis upon examination, but haypoke is a common injury. You don’t necessarily see the hay still in the eye - It can be a momentary poke which causes the damage. In some cases pieces of hay or hay seeds can become lodged under the eye lid - you won’t be able to see it as it requires veterinary expertise to do so.

Eyes are classed as urgent and do need treatment quickly to minimise the damage - eye injuries deteriorate quickly. Please do get your piggy seen.

If your piggy does have a haypoke, you are likely to be given antibiotic eye drops but do ensure your piggy is also given pain killers

I plan to get him seen as soon as possible. Do these injuries lead to loss on an eye? If so, how quickly?

As for treatment, I'm figuring out where to find it. Most places near me seem to not have medical items for guinea pigs. The only time I've obtained something was through a vet attached to pet store I bought him. Maybe I'm looking in the wrong places or forced to buy online. Do you have any recommendations?

Btw my uploads failed due to size. Hopefully this works.

Oh dear, that looks rather sore.

You don’t need a piggy specialist vet as eyes are the same across all species so any vet will know what to do. You cannot use any kind of home treatment (we never recommend this in any situation) - this needs to be veterinary diagnosed and prescribed treatment and pain killers

I’m afraid I can’t have recommendations for vets as I’m the UK but this link Guinea Lynx :: GL's Vet List is for US vets by state so may be of use to you.

It is sore and he is is rather mellow boy so I'm sure he is hurting more then he can express. Thank you for the advice. I'll take him to a nearby vet I'm familiar with using via my Gf's dogs and see if they take Guinea pigs. I am also going to switch him to a softer bedding since the current one I've recently obtained is clearly is more hazardous.

They don’t have to take guinea pigs. As mentioned above, eye treatment is the same across the board so any vet can see him. All the best and I hope his eye will recover.

How did you get on? It looks like he may need some antibiotics x
