I'm thinking of changing to fleece rather than wood shavings. Can I just buy any fleece? I saw some fleece kids blankets on sale at a local shop so was thinking of getting some.

I was also wondering if it gets smelly and how often you need to wash.

What do people use under the fleece? and how does your washing machine cope with the guinea pig hairs?

I bet its a lot less messy than wood shavings though!?

Hi,

I use fleece wouldn't use anything else, the only downfall is the washing but I'd rather that than woodshavings everywhere and the expence of it.

It doesn't smell if washed at 40 degrees, I use tesco liquid non bio:))

I put my fleece in horse bags before going into the washing machine so any hairs/hay/poop that havent shaken off dont go into the washer.
Any fleece as far as I know is fine ... anyone correct me if I'm wrong please. ... give them a couple of washes first though...and no fabric conditioner.
Fleece dries really quickly too...
I use towels underneath but am thinking of changing to either mattress toppers or inco pads.

I use fleece as well. But sometimes I put wood pellets underneath to soak up the urine. I am currently putting towels underneath as it is less messy. I shake everything off and put it in our washer. If it's nice outside I put them on the clothesline to dry. They dry very fast.

I"m going to get a laundry bag to wash them in though as I don't want to wreck my washing machine. That is my task for today, to go find a bag to put them in! :)

I have to clean the cages when I use towels and fleece every other day. When I use the wood pellets underneath I can swap the fleece out and leave the pellets a bit longer. Usually every 3-4 days. It's kinda a pain to scoop out the pellets though, which is why I've gone back to using towels. Even though they do need changing every other day it's easier to pull them out than to scoop up the pellets and then they might fall on the floor, etc. making a mess.

I put the fleece on top of the pellets because I don't want my piggles little feet to hurt. I think it would be like walking on rocks all day. ouch!

:)

I change mine every other day too - I guess it may depend ob the area and number of piggys though - I have heard that inco pads dont smell as much as towels but not tried them yet,

I have 8 pigs, 2 to a hutch. Each pair is in a 4ft hutch (apart from the babies) so I have a lot to cover. Costs me a fortune in wood shavings so really hoping the fleece works! I'm going to try it with the babies first and see how I get on. I bet its a lot cosier for the pigs.

I have 2 girls.

Only been using fleece with newspaper underneath since yesterday. So far so good.

Fleece we got is quite thick though :)

Inco pads are wonderful...my cage stays pong free for 6 days. With towels it was 2 days.

I'm useing fleece with towels and paper under but i have got a small section at the end of the cage with wood shavings and my gp goes to the toilet on that ,, but theres no smell at all :)

Kelly where is your fleece from its gorgeous. Mine's all plain colored

I have 4 pigs and they are on fleece. Towels underneath, fleece changed each week (unless really dirty), towels changed when needed to - I also have newspaper underneath the towels. The hutch doesnt smell and I brush it off each day from poops and hay and when I wash the towels and fleece in pillow cases to keep any hay, bedding and poo out the machine. I have a dog so it already copes with hair :))

I find the thicker the fleece the better. By the metre from fabric land worked out cheaper and better quality for me but there are bargain blankets out there.
I use newspaper then towels and fleece on top for my 4 cages, much cheaper!

in our asda they have brown and cream etc by the pillows etc but i got that one from by the childrens items like bedding and things like that and they have cerise, pink and white poka dot etc, and theres another section but thats all like thomas the tank and pepper pig :))

I had my fleece blankets from Asda for the boys and my OH bought the pink polka dot ones for the girls.
Primark also do fleece blankets in nice colours, had a huge cerise one for £4 which I've not used yet. There's a nice curtain shop near my home where they do them too in all patterns for £2.99 but I mostly get mine from the internet on a whim rolleyes as there are some brilliant designs.
The animal print and camoflage look great in the boys pens but I love the girly stuff for the little sows.

Just plain colored ones in our asda nevermind

do you have an ikea by you ? they have some lovely ones but they are huge i could probably cut about 12 out of 1 for my 120cm cage the plain ones are £10 and the pattern are £15 but they are really thick they are like sponge :)) I'm going to fetch a multi pink striped one next time i go in there :)
