Hi,

My pigs have moved outside after spending their life in the house 5 and 6 years. This morning when I checked on them, they appeared to be snuggled together in a small wooden box I had put out for them, do you think they're cold, the box is fully of hay? I am concerned they're not adapting, although they do seem happy enough. I moved them outside while we were having the hot weather, but believe the temperature is going to drop so I want to make provision for them. I already put a snuggle safe out for them, any other tips?

Thanks

they just sound like they are sleeping i wouldnt be too worried, althogh 5-6 years inside then out thats a big change after that long,i have never had outdoor piggies so will wait for someone to come along they should have some exta warm ideas for you xxxxx

I just make sure there is extra bedding. If its really cold I also cover the hutch with silver loft insulation from b&q as its much cheaper that a proper snuggle cover.

They're not in hutch they're in playhouse, hang on let me put up pics maybe that's why it feels cold to them? The playhouse has false wall and floor and in between that is insulation, they also have the silver rad insulation as a curtain for their window which is pulled down overnight.

Here it is, two live in there, so I am guessing maybe it feels a bit empty (the pigs are in there, just hiding :)))

it looks good, providing it has nice insulation, one thing maybe add an extra big pigloo with lots and lots of hay in it,if it has a small access door then there is less chance of the cold getting in xxxxxx
if they are tiles then that could be some of the reason they might be cold, i would put hay or fleece down as flooring for extra warmth xxxxx

Do you have a picture of what you mean please? :red, not sure what one is :))

for example these are pics of my cages they are indoors but the same principle can apply

little Boris has fleece for easier movement although i do prefer hay

hope this helps x

OK wicked, like a plastic pod thing? I will have a look for one today, thanks for that xoxo

No that's cool, shall I aim for one with a floor in, I am guessing it's going to be warming than being straight on the ground?

yeah you could do that or put a square of fleece under the house for a soft warm flooring and then put hay in it,that would make for a very cozy bed xxxxif you can try to use some sort of covering for the rest of the floor to as tiles get quite cold and it may stop them from wanting to venture out of a nice warm house xxxxxxx

Thanks hun, but actually that's not quite what I mean, a fleece wouldn't actually stop you from getting cold. Say if you went camping, lying on a fleece would make no difference whatsoever to your bodily warm, the only way it would make a difference is if you were elevated (that's what I meant). I doubt covering the floor would make any difference in general. Thanks for the tips, I will look for a pod that is elevated, although a pod that sits on the floor with no bottom wouldn't particularly do a lot in the way of warmth it would just act as a hidey hole.

Thanks for your help though :)

thats ok i tried my best considering my limtited knowledge of outdoor hutches, your best bet is to wait and see if any other members come along with better ideas or pm some of the girls that do rescue you will see them around and they usually know alot about all sorts of housing xxxxxxx

No your advice was wicked, off to look for a plastic/wood type house, with floor, I will lift it off the floor a bit and fill with bedding, you've been a great help, thank you :)p

Thanks Amy, well by the time I would of ordered it the frost would of arrived and I had already followed PLEASEHELPSAVEboris advice. I went to the shops, I had an idea in mind but do they make what I want :{. So I have bought two different things and bodging them together makes what I think they need :)). I got a dome thing and a elevated litter tray, they kind of fit together. I will take pics in a bit. It's only for cold summer nights I will bring them back in when it gets cold.

The tiles on the floor are only lino, not actual slate :)

Ok litter tray with legs

big enough to get a snuggle safe in (NB I know a cover should be on it, this is the demo purposes :)))

Big dome

Fits on top of tray, so will fill it with hay,

Do you think that will work, for two little piggies?

Thanks hun :)p, well I went to check on them this morning and they were in their wooden box again rolleyes:)), maybe they like it in there and they're not actually cold :)):)), but they really shove themselves in it though :{

Thanks Claire, I think I panicked because I never seem to see it in the house, but think they probably just cuddling awwww x)
