hi, I was wondering if anyone would have advice on what I should do. My guinea pig Coco woke up this morning with a limp and was unable to jump up and reach the food. he's usually the first one up to eat and chewing on the bars ready for food. However today Teddy came running out and coco came out slowly struggling to walk and opting to lay down more than walk. He is still eating and is also a rescue so we are unsure of his exact age but we do know he's an adult and most likely around 8-9 years old.

Hello,

Your boy needs to be seen by a vet as a matter of urgency.

If he is 8/9, that is a grand age for a piggie! So you must have done a great job so far.

Let us know how he is getting on.

Wow, what a wonderful age. He could have sprained a foot or a leg in which case he should be fine in a day or two but I’d have him seen by a vet if he is opting to lie down as it may be something more serious

Hope all goes well and he’s his sprightly self soon 🙂

so update on coco we have an appointment for Friday but he's starting to walk again and move around. He's eating his greens again and today I had him with the other pig (we separated them so he could rest without being jumped on) and he's sitting up on his own and not laying on his side at all. He still has a bit of limp as well but has anyone ever had a situation where their pig was peeing red almost like blood?

That needs mentioning to the vet, if the urine is coming out red and contains blood then he needs to be seen perhaps call them and see if you can bring the appointment forward.

so update on coco bean. we took him to the vet and the doc said it could just be from old age and but after that, he started to get better and act like his old self however I am very broken hearted to say that we are going back to the vet and I think that this time we are saying goodbye and putting him down. If anyone has two pigs and has had to put one down can you please tell me if it's best to leave him alone for a bit after putting the friend down or if it's better to get a new friend as soon as possible. I have two pigs and coco will most likely be leaving us tomorrow if he even makes it through the night but the other one teddy is only a year old and they are both males (not sure if it's any different when it comes to losing for the genders.)

I’m so sorry for your loss. As long as the other pig is okay and you give him lots of attention you can wait a while. You could wait up to about a month or so. As long as your other pig is alright and not having in long term drastic changes in behavior it’s more as when you are ready to get another pig. If you want to introduce a new pig ASAP maybe give coco’s partner 3-5 days. This is my answer in my experience but it really depends on the pig. Sending my regards to coco and his family.

thank you I'm planning to wait a bit and see how teddy does with coco being gone but I do have a feeling it's gonna hit him hard as he refuses to leave coco side right now and just wants to stay next to him and cuddle for as long as he can. This is my first time owning more than one pig so I just wanted to check as I do know they are social creatures and cant be left alone.

I’m sorry you’re having to make such a tough decision. I’ve got everything crossed that he holds on a little longer so you can have more happy today’s.

Regarding his companion, be led by him. If he goes into deep pinning then you’ll have to do. it much sooner rather than later.

All the best.

Sending Coco and his fam my best wishes tonight. Hoping he feels well and is at peace. Get some rest, taking care of a sick pig is no easy task. So sorry you have to make a very difficult choice.
I agree with @Siikibam deciding when to get another boar is pretty dependent on how his mate reacts.
Best Wishes,
Sunny and Butch 🐹🐹

so coco is no longer with us. The doctors said he was acting off from old age and a failed kidney and sadly he was put to sleep. So now it's just me and Teddy Bear at home and I think possible Friday or this coming weekend I will have to bring a new friend home as Teddy is acting very off already
