My boar of almost 4 years of age, is having clumpy poop. He's also pooping normally, but some of it is clumpy. Should I be worried or see a vet?

Hi

You may want to check whether your boar is developing impaction. He is at the right age for it, too. Impaction affects a small minority of boars. In good care on a mainly hay based diet it is mainly down to a genetic disposition but there are things you can do to help slowing it down.

I noticed that's it's mentioned that impaction leads to poop being really smelly, and that the boars lose their appetite. Mochi has none of these symptoms. His poop is rarely clumped(only 1 of 2).

Sometimes when we clean the cage, we take him out and keep him on the bed. He is litter trained, and doesn't poop then. Immediately after he goes back into the cage, this clumpy poop occurs. Can it be because he was holding it back while outside the cage?

Hi

It sounds like very, very early stages to me or otherwise it is a very minor tummy upset. Please keep a regular check of his weight. If he only has his clumpy poos after being taken out, then they can be the result of holding back but if he is making them across the day then it looks like the very start of impaction. Initially, impaction is not necessarily solid.

It may help us if you please posted pictures of the range of poos he produces. We can only ipck up on what you are telling us but don't have any direct access.

I’ve had a piggy with impaction. It’s is not normal poop stuck together. It is held back on their anal sack and you have to help them remove it by squeezing it out (sometimes twice a day). It is the most stinky thing you have ever smelt 🤢. But so satisfying at the same time 🤣

His weight hasn't fluctuated much, if at all. I'll try to take photos in the morning and post them. These clumpy poops only occur right after I put him back in the cage after he's been out for some time. His appetite is good, and his other poop is great. Thanks for the help.
