Hi folks,

What is the best way to shift wax from piggies ears? Belle has a sizeable clump in each ear. Its quite hard, i think i will need to soften it first. Any tips?

Floofy Louise's wax ends up dangling from the edges of her ears like grim earrings. At that point I just tweak it off with my fingers trying not to pull her hair. Vet said she was OK, just maybe got a hot head from all the hair! Funnily enough she doesn't get it so much now that she's living with George and Flora. I don't know whether one of them is grooming her..? If it was right down inside I'd be speaking to a vet though, just in case there was any underlying problem.

I have seen some people in the pig community clean their ears with coconut oil, massaging it gently onto their ears, and then run a cotton bud in an outwards motion (not sticking it into their ears, but on the external parts) to get any dirt that comes away off. Please correct me anyone if this isn’t good advice, it’s just something I’ve seen a few people who make videos about pigs do!

I've seen videos too, I have no idea about the oil but piggies jerk and move very suddenly, so however careful you are, a cotton bud could penetrate the eardrum.

I really would not recommend going anywhere near a guinea pig’s ear with a cotton bud. If the guinea pig moves suddenly, there is a risk the bud could go down and damage the eardrum. There is also a risk using oil and any sort of cleaning tool that you will actually make things much worse. I would definitely recommend getting a vet or vet nurse to check the ears properly and decide what, if anything, needs doing.
