Just got a guinea pig from husbands family. It’s nails are very long and it has what appears to be brown clumps under nails. Help?!

Hi! Welcome to the forum!

The brown clumps under the nails is probably poops that the guinea pig has stepped in. My piggies get that sometimes too. It shouldn't be too much of an issue as long as it is just a little bit; not covering the whole paw. I have included the forum guide on how to trim your piggies' nails. Hopefully this will be helpful as it also includes a video.

Guide to Cutting Guinea Pig Nails

It's probably poop crusted under the nails... soaking the foot in warm water may help loosen it and make it easier to remove if you can't just cut it off when you trim the nails.

If you're at all anxious about trimming piggy nails, then take your piggy to a vet and the vet nurse will show you what to do for next time.

I agree, if you're not used to guinea pigs and the pig is not familiar with you, get the vet to do it the first time. It will also allow you to get a general checkup.

One of my boys is terrible for always getting poop stuck on his nails. He regularly has what I call his 'foot spa' time 😂 Usually a tiny bit of warm water soaks them off. Just be careful none sticks on the pads as you don't want to end up with sores. I found F10 barrier cream is amazing. I apply some after his foot soaks (to dry feet) and it acts like a barrier to prevent poop sticking to his pads
