Hi all,

I came home from work today to notice my senior pig has a very cloudy/red and sore looking eye. It is not bleeding but is red around the edges. I’m a fairly experienced owner and have had him since he was a baby but have never seen anything like this with him. I'm thinking hay poke/ or scratch and he will be going to the vets tomorrow with him.

any advice from people who have experienced this? And what are standard treatments as only one of my local vets has a small pet specialist however she only works certain daysEA97FAD2-9687-42F8-B75C-80BF0C3BB050.webp so I can’t be sure I will be able to see her tomorrow.
Thanks

Hi!

Please have your piggy seen for an ulcerating eye injury as soon as possible - every hour counts.
Eye injuries are priorised in the UK because they can deteriorate so quickly; but they also heal the better and quicker the sooner they are treated.

Thankfully, eye treatment and medication for guinea pigs is the same as for other species, so you do not need to see a small animal specialist but the vet who can see your piggy soonest.

All the best! Please make sure that you are also getting a lubricant in addition to antibiotic eye drops or gel.

Ouch - that looks nasty.
Hope you can get a speedy appointment with the vet.
Holding you in my thoughts
