I've just noticed this morning that one of my guinea pigs eyes looks milky/cloudy. I don't think he can see out of it because he doesn't move when i put an object near him.

He's not displaying any unusual behaviour he's drinking, eating as normal and seem very happy.

I thinking he is starting to go blind because he is nearly 4 years old, should i be worried and take him to a vet.

Please take your guinea pig to the vets asap for a proper diagnosis.

He could have the start of a cataract or have a hay poke injury in which he will need treatment for.

Hi there, welcome to the forum. I would take your piggy to the vet, one of mine developed a very cloudy eye, which I thought it was blind through but, after a few days of drops being put in, all was fine. I think the drops cost about 3 or 4 pounds so not too expensive either. Hope your little piggy feels better soon.

One of my piggies had this recently. I was surprised that it didn't cost much at the vets and amazed how quickly it cleared up with the eye drops - took less than 24hrs!

It sounds like an ulcerating hay poke/eye injury rather than a cataract. Thankfully, with the right treatment, it should come down again nearly as quickly as they come on.

Please see a vet as soon as possible, as the progressive injury will start to affect your piggy and can cause long term problems.

Taking Doogle to the vets

Well rang the vets and got him an appointment at 3:50 today so will update you all this afternoon.

I would just like to thank you all for the advice, it was just a big shock to see him like that yesterday.

What did the vet say? Hopefully it was most likely a Hay poke and the eye should heal within weeks

I hope that the vet visit went well?

Post vet

Well i've been given some eye drops for him and the cloudiness has all but cleared now but he still doesn't seem to be able to see out the eye but we are going back to the vet on thursday and i'll bring it up then if he still can't see.

can't believe how much it scared me to see his eye all clouded over

It can be an age related change. It is sometimes caused by scars from past abrasion or infection to the cornea of the eye. The horse may see just fine. If there is a concern have a vet do a stain that will show if the eye has an infection/ulcers/ or is cut. More inportant is if the horse is having pain, swelling or excesive tearing or puss in the eye

This happened with my Nala .. suddenly her eye went milky white! The vet found a scratch right across the top of the eye, probably a hay scratch, she had to have antibiotic eye drops for 2 weeks! Get your lil one to the vet asap just incase so that it doesn't affect their overall ability to see!
