Hi Everyone,

We came home this morning from one night away to find our 7 year guinea pig has a completely cloudy eye! It must have developed really quickly as we were only away about 12 hours. Anyway, my husband took her to the vet within the hour. They put the dye in, but couldn’t see any hay etc or scratches. So they’ve given us eye drops to give her twice a day. My husband said the vet had said it will sort things out within a few days.

My only worry is that if they couldn’t see a scratch or anything in her eye, could it still be in there? The vet didn’t flush her eye out. She just pulled back her eye lid and had a look. Also my husband didn’t ask what could have caused it if it wasn’t a scratch. Obviously we’ll keep a close eye on her, but I’m just wondering if anyone has any advice? Could it be an invisible scratch? Would the drops still work if it’s not caused by a scratch?

Thanks everyone!

I would go through the eye drops. My Finn had his eye looked at by a vet due to an eye infection in the past. The infection cleared after a week of ointment treatment. Just give it some time. Finn's vet said the same thing that there was no scratch or hay poke.

Ah thank you

Thank you! That’s really helpful to know. Fingers crossed she’s back to normal soon. Feel so sorry for her!

What was the diagnosis?
No real diagnosis- she apparently just said no sign of a scratch and she couldn’t see anything in her eye. So she prescribed the eye drops. The lack of diagnosis was what worried me.

I don’t think this is lack of diagnosis. The diagnosis is that there is no significant damage which is a good thing!

Do the drops as prescribed and see how things go.

I hope her eye is back to normal in no time!

No worries, I was just wondering if there was any additional information that could be helpful.

My boy also has a sore eye (Fatty Eye) and had no scratch, his eye is swollen but it is a similar situation.
Hopefully your boys eye feels better soon, the eye drops will help fight and heal whatever is going on.

My Louise had something stuck in her eye and it puffed up like Rocky's in the film. It wasn't just a grey cover - it was a squinting cat's bum of an eye! Luckily with the big glasses on I could see the thorny problem and pull it out but she still had the dye and gel and all that from the vet for the aftermath.
