Our Guinea pig Christopher is four years old, he is healthy, but I noticed today one of his eyes is a cloudy blue with a bit of red. There was a bit of hay in the red which I removed. I gave him eye drops and cleaned his cage. Do you think this will heal or should we take him to the vet? Bear in mind it is likely to be very expensive and we are not a rich household … please help!93C36D25-9EBE-43D7-B72D-1261F7F6D238.webp

Please have your piggy seen by a vet asap. Any eye injury, including hay in the eye (haypoke) is considered urgent and needs to be seen by a vet within 24 hours of the injury/haypoke occurring. UK vets will prioritise eye injuries given how quickly they can deteriorate. Eyes are however the same in all species so you do not need an exotic vet in this case. Seeing a vet quickly results in the best outcome if the correct treatment is given promptly. The cloudiness you are now seeing is likely ulceration. A prescribed course of antibiotic eye drops and pain relief needs to be given. We also recommend a hydrating gel/drop is given alongside to aid healing (although antibiotic drops and hydrating gel should not be given at the same time - Leave at least half an hour to allow antibiotic drops to soak in before applying a gel)
Please don’t put any drops in the eye yourself (we never recommend any home treatments for any health issue - doing so can delay getting the correct treatment, but also it can cause further problems if the wrong thing is given) and instead head straight to the vet. A vet needs to use special dye and fluorescent light to check for damage and any other potential pieces of hay which may still be in the eye and thus still causing continuous injury every time piggy blinks.
We understand it can be expensive to see a vet, but getting the correct medical treatment promptly for any issue is cheaper in the long run. Such an eye injury will not heal itself and if left can be more expensive as it can take a longer course of medication and eye drops to heal it. At worst, prolonged untreated damage can result in the loss of vision and/or the actual eye meaning expensive surgery to remove the eye.

I have to agree with @Piggies&buns, eye issues always need a swift vet visit as they can go so wrong so quickly. They can also be very painful!
Get your piggy to the vet, maybe have a chat with them about a payment plan? 😊

Welcome to the forum. Good luck at the vets. I’m sure your piggy will soon be on the mend.

Do you have a pets at home near you with either a companion care or vets4pets inside? Usually you can get a consult and treatment for something as common as a hay poke for under £50 from one of the chain store vets and a good number will be used to seeing this sort of issue due to the petshop using them as their own vet for the small animals they sell. It needn't be an expensive trip to an exotic vet. Some still open on Sundays I believe, usually 10:30am-4pm

Welcome to the forum.
I agree with the advice given.
A speedy vet trip will hopefully get it sorted quickly.
Keep us posted

:wel: to the forum.
Yes, you definitely need to see a vet. Are there any puncture marks? His eye is going to get worse the longer you wait, and as said above, if you do not not get the eye treated soon it may have to be taken out.

I wish you luck! I hope your piggy recovers quickly. 🤞

I agree with all the others.
Sadly guinea pigs are often not the 'cheap starter pets' that pet shops like to make them out to be.

Thankfully eye problems, if treated quickly, can usually be resolved for a reasonable amount of money.

However it is important to start to save now for future health issues which may arrive. Many members put a fixed amount of money aside every month to cover vets bills. Even saving a small amount can make a big difference later on.

I hope your piggy is able to see a vet and recovers quickly.
Don't forget to take his companion along for comfort and support when he goes to he vet too.

The way I look at vet visits is the sooner you go the easier and cheaper it will be to treat., Left many conditions can deteriorate and you will end up with an expensive course of treatment or worse an operation.

No he’s fine, the vet just said they are going to keep an eye on it and see if anything changes, but hopefully we get him back first thing tomorrow!

It's good they're going to keep an eye on him, but a bit unusual if its an uncomplicated hay poke. They normally just give the medications and send them back home.
Have they prescribed in antibiotics and painkillers?

Have you been able to send his piggy friend with him so he isnt alone?

Any more news on your boy? Hopefully his antibiotic eye drops should be taking effect very soon. I was at our vet today and saw a giant dog coming out with exactly the same tube of eye drops I get for guinea-pig hay poke! Seems like it's very common

I hope your boy is back home in familiar surroundings. What meds/eye drops was he prescribed?

Which eye drops were those? I wonder if it’s the same I got for Christopher or my doggo Bonnie 🧐

Did they list what he was given on the treatment plan? I’m curious to know what he was given.
