BubbleSqueak

I attempted to clip my little squeak's nails today for the second time, and i find it difficult with him having very dark black nails. Anyway, my worst nightmare came true today and i made him bleed, its bled quite a lot, ive held some wet cotton wool with salt water on it and it now seems to have stopped. I feel so guilty, will it grow back okay? Will it become infected? Please help.

Awww dont feel bad! It was an accident. Imagine what would happen if you didnt cut his nails. Umm perhaps give it a salt water bath once or twice a day?
I'm not sure if you can out human antiseptic products on piggies. I'm sure someone else can give you some better advice than mine.
Dont feel bad! :)

If you are worried about it becoming infected you could take Squeak to the vet for an antibiotic. Just to make sure it doesn't get an infection. if you keep it clean and keep an eye on it, it should grow back.

It will not get infected.Almost everyone overcuts a nail occasionaly, especially on gps with black nails.I have done this myself. They always bleed profusily. To stop this, place a pack of frozen peas against the end of the nail.,or you could use a stytic pencil if you have one..Try also to elevate the limb and press hard on the base of the bleeding nail.It always looks as if they are bleeding to death, but the blood loss looks worse than it is.I have never known a gp get an infected nail through overclipping.

Aww thanks very much mary. Ive done what you said with the peas and it has stopped bleeding thank goodness. That has put me of clipping black nails for life.. I agree with you about it looking like their bleeding to death, i really began to panic. Ill just keep an eye on him now and see how he gets on. Thanks again

For gps with black nails it is a good idea to snip just a tiny amount every week rather than letting the nails get long. You can .if you have time, file the tips of the nails to keep them blunted down.

Dont feel bad - I find it impossible to cut one of the piggys nails so I have to get a vet to do it and they sometimes over cut and they are professionals! :)

You can see the quick in the black nails by shining a light (torch) underneath..... you need a spare pair of hands though to be doing that.

My vet said you can use the stick the men use after they've nicked themselves with the shaver or just use plain cornflour and press against the nail.

Just keep them trimmed every two weeks a little bit, so you don't have to cut a lot in four to six weeks.
