Hi my 5 year old gorgeous cinnamon is not well. I’ve stepped in with syringe feeding and water. He has been on frusimide for a year for an enlarged heart and last check up a few weeks ago showed his teeth are a little overgrown but he has been eating well despite this and maintained his weight. Poop normal etc. I spoke to the vet this morning and she said give some metacam and see how he goes with syringe feeding and see him in the morning. His breathing seems normal for him. He looks a bit miserable and fluffed up a bit earlier which suggests he might be in pain? Help. What do I do? Take him to out of hours? I’ve checked his bum for impaction. I know older boars are notorious for this. Looks ok as far as I can see. No sign of bloat. My lovely old boy. 😢

Poor guy 💕 I have a gorgeous female Cinnamon.

Sounds like you're doing all you can for now, and if it was me, Id keep the morning appointment. Maybe holding him on your lap and cuddling to warm him up would be soothing. It's so sad to see them fluffed up.

Hope all gets better soon ✨

Hi!

I am very sorry. These things have a nasty tendency to blow up over the weekend, unfortunately. :(

If you can still get 10 ml or more of syringe feed into him with each session (aim for 60 ml in 24 hours), then your boy can wait until tomorrow.
If you are struggling to get up to 5 ml into him in a go, then please see the out of hours vets for pain medication and gut stimulants.

All the best!

Thank you. Always at the weekend. Vet said up the frusemide and give an antibiotic in case there is something underlying. I don’t see any signs of bloat .. the gut stimulants are for bloat? Managing to get 5ml CC ever couple of hours. Is that enough? Such a fed up piggy. 😢

The gut stimulants are to help with loss of appetite as a stop gap measure in an emergency with near total or tal loss of appetite but it very much depends on what the vet is findingin the hands-on examination. Go with your vet's recommendation first and foremost.

Thank you Merab’s slave. It’s not liking good to be honest. He’s not interested in food or water. I’m managing to get some CC and fluids down but he’s not liking it one bit. 😢

And I’ve managed to trap my finger in the door and I’ve got a cold! Poor Cinnamon. I want to keep him close but I think he’s better in his usual surroundings?

I feel awful forcing the cc down him. He’s not interested.😐

All the best. If you feel that he is deteriorating very fast overnight, then please speak to the out-of-hours vets.
Caring for a very ill piggy is very disheartening and draining; especially when you are already feeling very grotty. Please leave him in his familiar surroundings if they are warm and cosy; this lowers the stress.

Thanks Weibke, he wa in warm familiar surroundings. In room with cage mates. Tried a syringe feed and water just now and sorry to say that he passed in my arms. I knew he was no long fur this world and with his heart condition. One of the most lovely and special boys.. a gentleman of piggies and one of our first. RIP my sweet boy.

I rang the vet 2/3 times. I think due to heart issue they were not keen to see him sooner. Was it heart failure of gut stasis? He was a bit puffed up? Wish o had taken him now. It’s always the way.. did I do the right thing? Can gut stasis be secondary to heart failure? Very sad indeed this morning.

sudden apathy and no gut gurgling. Your guinea pig is not responding much or at all when picked up and handled. It struggles to chew or swallow. Please speak to a vet asap; your guinea pig has GI stasis (no gut movement), acute heart failure.

Can I ask is this section saying either or? GI stasis OR acute heart failure? Or both? I hate to think Cinnamon was in pain. 😰

Oh, I'm so sorry to hear that he didn’t make it. Hugs to you and your piggies 💖

I'm no expert but I did just experience a very bad bout of gut stasis/bloat with my girl who’s still not out of the woods. Id bet it was his heart, if he already had a known heart condition.

It’s so hard when you question decisions, but it sounds like he was going to pass and being at home surrounded by loved ones is the way to go 💓💓💓

Thank you scooter pig. Such a heavy heart. It’s so hard the decision making process, especially over the weekend. 😰

Oh no! I'm so sorry. Take comfort in the fact you did everything right. Be kind to yourself. Run free Cinnamon ❤️🌈
