Hi again, one of my girls has had both her eyes watery for several weeks now. I think it started in one but then both became affected. There was never any obvious injury like haypoke. The only symptom is it produces clear watery tears, the fur can be seen wet where it goes out of the eye. She has been brought to the vet for it, she had no sign of a URI. She has been on isathal eye drops for 10+ days and enrofloxacin eye drops for two weeks. She didnt show much change or improvement during either courses.

We asked the vet what to do as it still hasnt got better and they want another course of isathal..I'm not keen because it has done nothing for it so far and I dont want to keep using antibiotics unnecessarily. Seeing as two different antibiotics havent done anything I'm thinking it does not seem to be conjunctivitis or a bacterial infection.

The vet said dental issues wouldnt cause this kind of thing but I'm worried it could be the tooth roots being elongated? I'm wondering what you guys would do as the next step..Should I fork out for an x-ray to see if theres a dental issue? Or just leave her and keep wiping it with saline? She seems perfectly happy in herself otherwise..

Oh and I forgot to mention of course the vet did fluorescence drops to check for damage and said there was maybe a very small ulcer on one eye but that was it

A year ago @Betsy 's Thea had a gunky/watery eye for several months, with no ulceration visible when tested by the vet. Eventually a hay seed worked its way out from under the eye lid (helped probably by daily Viscotears application). Maybe your pig's problem is something like that.

I'm not sure if a brewing abscess behind the eye could cause watering however, so I would monitor her weight closely to see if that or any other pain-causing issue leading to loss of appetite is behind the wateriness.

Yes @Qualcast&Flymo is quite right, Thea did have a green gunky eye for 3 months. I couldn't see any hay in it, the vet couldn't see any hay in it. There was no ulcer either. The vet said to bathe it in cold tea (yes that's right cold tea) for a week and if it was no better to go and get some isthal. I got some isathal put it in Thea's eye for 7 days, there was no difference, 2 bottles of enroflaxin later, still no difference. So I just kept on wiping it every day with cotton wool and water and carried on with the viscotears until one day, I saw a small bit of hay in the corner of her eye and carefully pulled out a seed head that was about 2cms long that had been hidden under her eyeball she squeaked a bit as the hay seed was being pulled out.

Here is the thread in case you want to read it.

Thats interesting! I think I'll start using tear gel we have and saline to wipe it..I definitely wouldnt call it gunky. My boy had a hay poke a while ago and his eye was definitely gunky afterwards but this is different..Its just a tiny bit of clear wet on the fur from the corners. Because its developed in both eyes I think something in it/an injury is unlikely..I have read on here some with pigs who had blocked tear ducts and permanently watery eyes. I hope its that but it worries me that it may be something else painful. But unless we ask for an xray theres nothing else i or the vet can think of

Hi sorry to bother again..my boy seems to be in a very similar position. His eye keeps getting gunky days after finishing eye drops and hes been on 3 different ones, some of them twice. I had a good look around his eye and cant see anything stuck but of course something could be really well hidden. I just wanted to ask would you have carried on with just wiping it forever or were you thinking of trying anything else if it had persisted?
