Hi. I have a three year old sweet girl with a jaw abscess we have been fighting for 7 weeks. She has already had multiple xrays and surgery to debride the abscess when it was the size of a small plum. She was on antibiotics and we took her back every week to have her open wound cleaned and antibiotic gauze changed out. We thought it was all cleared up, until last night. The open wound area is healed, and now the jaw abscess is back, the size of a small grape. The vet says xrays are inconclusive for this being caused by a tooth. Culture of the pus showed an "unusual" species of bacteria. We have paid over $1,600 already, and now this vet wants us to go to a specialist that will cost thousands more with no promise of curing it.
I'm at my wit's end. Help, please! 🥺

Aww I’m so sorry for your poor wee girlie. She must be in so much pain. Hope u get things sorted

Hi

I am ever so sorry about your problems and the massive vet cost. What antibiotic has your girl been on and for how long? My Hywel was on several courses of zithromax (azythromycin) and needed two operations because of the bad timing the abscess did come back.

I am tagging in @furryfriends (TEAS) for you. She has the most experience with jaw abscesses.

Welcome to the forum! It's nice to see a fellow Hoosier. I haven't had any experience with jaw abscesses, but hoping for the best for your piggy.

Sadly, my guinea pig had the same problem. It died yesterday.

Thank you so much for reaching out. She has been on Doxycycline for about 3 weeks. Was on Bactrim for 3 weeks before that.

One of my pigs had a persistent jaw abscess... it did improve with Zithromax and continual cleaning after being lanced and drained... and I mean months of keeping the area open and irrigating it daily, along with long-term antibiotic treatment. ((HUGS)), it's a nasty problem to have to deal with and I'm sorry you and your pig are going through it!
