Hi everyone,

These will be our first piggies. Our local rescue has 2 pairs of boars available. First pair are approx 16 weeks, second pair are 2 years old.

I've been reading here for weeks, so am tempted to go for the older pair to hopefully avoid hormonal fights, but one of them is long haired and I don't feel that confident at cutting it being a new owner. One of the older pair also has a history of UTIs which worries me.

I know I'm asking the impossible, but how do I choose?!

Thank you 😊

I can’t help you I’m afraid. I understand why you’re worried about the older one with the recurring UTIs. But if you have a good vet it should be manageable.....We also have a good guide on here for maintaining long haired piggies.

I’d ask how the younger ones were bonded...If they were left to choose a friend then that’s a base for a good bond. They’re just at the start of the teenage phase, but they could survive it so don’t discount them. Sorry that wasn’t much help 😁

It's really your call... I will say that I have had long-haired pigs and trimming fur is really not that big a deal, so I wouldn't let that be your deciding factor. Trimming long hair, for me at least, is much easier than trimming nails, and you have to do that particular task on the short-haired pigs too! I hope you enjoy your new piggies, whichever pair you bring home!

I have a long haired piggie and it's not that difficult to keep trimmed and tidy. I wrote the forum guide to hair cutting and it is easy to follow. Can't link it in on this device. You will be able to find it in the Daily Care section.

have you met any of the piggies yet? it may be worth keeping an open mind until you do. Your heart might want to make that decision for you.
